The Golden Scalpel National Veterinary Award is the highest award of the Russian veterinary community, annually awarded for special achievements in the field of veterinary medicine [1] [2] [3] . It is considered the most prestigious veterinary award in Russia [4] [5] [6] .

The founder of the prize is the Association of Practicing Veterinarians of Russia [7] .
The first "Golden scalpel" was awarded in 1998 [1] [6] .
Content
Awarding
Nominees and laureates are selected by a titled jury , awards are awarded in several categories [1] .
The “scalpel” figurine was created by the famous sculptor Andrei Nalich [1] [8] . The figurine itself is cast in bronze , and at its base is a natural stone [1] .
Together with the Golden Scalpel statuette, the winners are awarded a breastplate with an image of a lancet entwined with a ribbon, each sign is assigned an individual number [1] .
Laureates are announced during a ceremony in the framework of the Moscow International Veterinary Congress - the largest Russian event in the field of veterinary medicine [9] [10] .

The prize winners can be both individual specialists in the field of veterinary medicine and organizations [11] [12] [13] .
According to data for 2015, over 70 specialists have been awarded in the entire history of the prize [14] . In 2003 alone, more than 100 applications for participation in the competition were submitted [6] .

- The second nomination is “For the impeccable service of the profession .” The prize is awarded for many years of dedicated service to one's specialty, for the upbringing and transfer of experience to a new galaxy of doctors, for contribution to the development of veterinary medicine in the country.
- The third nomination is “For Professionalism”. It is handed over to specialists dedicated to the profession and having achieved the highest results in their veterinary activities.
- The fourth nomination is “Lecturer of the Year”. Presented to lecturers of the Association of Practicing Veterinarians, as well as teachers of Russian veterinary universities and research organizations.
- The fifth nomination is “Clinic of the Year”. It is handed to the teams of veterinary clinics for their professionalism and reputation.
- Sixth nomination - “For the popularization of the profession of a veterinarian”. The prize is awarded to journalists , teams and print media, veterinarians who make a great contribution to the popularization of the profession of a veterinarian.
- The seventh nomination is “County doctor”.
- The eighth nomination is “For devotion to the profession”.
Prizes of the same name
There is the same name Russian medical award established by the Association of Surgeons of the Republic of Bashkortostan . The prize is awarded for the best surgical operation in hospitals of the republic [29] [30] [31] [32] [33] .
