The book of souls

The Book of Souls ( Russian Book of Souls ) is the sixteenth studio album of the British heavy metal band Iron Maiden , released on September 4, 2015 [17] . This is the first double album of the group, consisting of 11 tracks. Its duration is 92 minutes 11 seconds [18] , which makes it the longest in the history of the group. Previously, the record belonged to the previous album, The Final Frontier (2010), whose duration is 76 minutes 35 seconds.

About the album

The group’s plans for the sixteenth studio album first became known from Bruce Dickinson in September 2013, when he said that the album will be released in 2015 [18] . Since Dickinson was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor and had to undergo treatment, the release of the album was postponed from June 18 to September 4 [19] . Released on the Parlophone label , this is the band’s first album to not be released on EMI , as the company was acquired by Warner Music Group in 2013 [20] . In the US, the album will be released by Sanctuary Copyrights / BMG [21] .

The album cover was designed by Mark Wilkinson [22] , who previously collaborated with Iron Maiden on releases such as Live at Donington (a remastered version of 1998) and Best of the 'B' Sides (2002 compilation), and also designed covers for singles from The Wicker Man ”and“ Out of the Silent Planet ” [23] . The album was recorded in late summer 2014 at Guillaume Tell Studios, in Paris. The producer was Kevin Shirley. At the beginning of 2015, The Book of Souls introduced the finishing touches [22] . The Brave New World album was recorded in the same studio in the 2000s, as Dickinson said: “We all have special memories with this studio. We felt with pleasure that that magical energy is alive and healthy! ”" [24] . Bassist Steve Harris claims that many of the compositions were created and immediately recorded right in the studio, that is, "filled with life" [24] .

The 92-minute The Book of Souls is Iron Maiden's longest album. Regarding the length of the recording, Dickinson said the following: “Everyone agreed that each track is such an integral part of the whole that if you need to do a double album, then let it be double!” The last 18-minute song, “ Empire of the Clouds, ” became the band's longest track (formerly considered “Rime of the Ancient Mariner” from the 1984 album Powerslave ). The Book of Souls was also the first album since Powerslave to feature two tracks written by Dickinson alone (Empire of the Clouds and If Eternity Should Fail) [25] . According to Harris, the album is not conceptual , although there are references to the concept of the soul [24] .

On February 24, 2016, a tour entitled “ The Book Of Souls World Tour - 2016 ” began, which lasted until the beginning of August and consists of 69 concerts worldwide. Especially for the tour, a Boeing 747 was leased and repainted [26] .

On April 16, 2016, the song “ Empire of the Clouds ” was released on a single on vinyl.

Honors

The Book of Souls won the Classic Album Album of the Year 2015 Award [27] .
