Olmeca (lat.) Is an oligotypic genus of monocotyledonous plants of the Cereals family ( Poaceae ) [2] from the tribe of bamboos ( Bambuseae ) [3] . Highlighted by the American botanist Thomas Robert Söderström in 1982 [4] .

The genus is named after the Olmecs , the ancient Mesoamerican Native American people [5] .
The genus includes at least two plant species [2] :

In some sources, the genus includes up to five species [3] .
Known from the south of Mexico and Honduras [6] [3] , according to some sources - endemic to Mexico [5] [7] .
