Biography

Born in the city of Ichnia, Chernihiv region of the Ukrainian SSR .

In 1961 he graduated from the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics of Kiev State University. T. G. Shevchenko .

All his scientific activities are associated with the Institute of Mechanics. S.P. Timoshenko of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, which he heads since 1976.

In 1962, Alexander Nikolaevich defended his thesis, and in 1965 - his doctoral dissertation. 1973 was elected a corresponding member, and in 1978 - a full member of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine .

Scientific and pedagogical activity

A.N. Guz made a significant contribution to the development of mechanics of bodies of deformable and mechanics of continuous media. His scientific potential in this area is the three-dimensional theory of stability of deformable bodies; theory of propagation and diffraction of elastic waves in multiply connected bodies and bodies with initial stresses; stress concentration at the holes in the shells; mechanics of composite materials and structural elements from them; aerohydroelasticity; non-classical problems of fracture mechanics; rock mechanics; dynamics of viscous compressible fluid; mechanics of nanocomposites; non-destructive methods for determining stresses in solids.

About 900 scientific works, including 56 monographs, came from the pen of Alexander Nikolaevich. Under his leadership and with direct participation, fundamental multi-volume collective monographs were prepared and published: “Methods for calculating shells” in 5 volumes (1980-1982), “Mechanics of composite materials and structural elements from them” in 3 volumes (1982-1983. ), “Spatial problems of the theory of elasticity and plasticity” in 6 volumes (1984-1986), “Mechanics of coupled fields in structural elements” in 5 volumes (1987-1989), “non-classical problems of fracture mechanics” in 4 volumes (1990-1994) and The Mechanics of Composites in 12 volumes (1993-2003). During 2005-2007 3 volumes were published; the six-volume edition of Uspekhi Mekhaniki.

He prepared 33 doctors and 100 candidates of sciences.

The name of A. N. Guzya is well known in world science. He is a founding member of the World Academy, he is a member of the New York and European Academies of Sciences. The scientist is a member of the editorial boards of a number of foreign scientific journals. Editor-in-chief of the international scientific journal Applied Mechanics, chairman of the National Committee of Ukraine for Theoretical and Applied Mechanics.
