Biography
Born January 28, 1962 in New York . She studied economics and commerce at La Sapienza University of Rome and graduated with a diploma thesis on President Reagan's 1981 tax reform. From 1983 to 1987 she worked at the research center of Montedison Corporation, in 1982 she joined the board, and from 1989 - in the national secretariat of the environmental organization Legambiente , where she was responsible for international relations from 1988 to 1994. In 1991, she joined the National Board of the Democratic Party of the Left Forces ; in 1996, she joined the executive structures of the Olive Tree coalition [1] .
In 1994, she was elected to the Chamber of Deputies of the XII convocation and from May 5, 1994 was a member of the faction of progressive federalists. In 1996, she was elected to the Chamber of the XIIIth convocation, in 2001 to the XIVth; both times included in the Left Democrats-Olive Tree faction. In 2006-2008, in the House of the XV convocation, she was a member of the Democratic Party-Olive Tree faction [2] , from May 5, 2008 to November 12, 2012, in the House of the XVI convocation, she was a member of the Democratic Party faction, she passed the mandate ahead of schedule [3] .
On October 21, 1998, she took the oath as Minister of Cultural and Natural Heritage of the first government of D'Alem [4] , from December 22, 1999 to April 25, 2000 she was Minister of Cultural Heritage and Cultural Activities in the second government of D'Alem [5] and from 25 April 2000 to June 11, 2001 in the second government of Giuliano Amato [6] . From May 17, 2006 to May 7, 2008 she was Minister of Sport and Youth Policy in the second government of Prodi [7] .
On October 19, 2012, the Minister of Culture in the Government of Monti Lorenzo Ornagi appointed Giovanna Melandri as the Director of the XXI Century National Museum of Art (MAXXI), and for this appointment she handed in an early parliamentary mandate. The decision to appoint her for a long time has been criticized, mainly because of doubts about her competence and in connection with the size of the salary appointed by Melandry, as well as doubts about the legality of its establishment [8] .
Personal life
In 2009, Giovanna Melandry married lawyer Marco Morelli (born in Rome on April 2, 1949), in 1998, the daughter of Maddalena was born. Being the birthright of a US citizen, Melandry in 2008 voted in Rome in the primaries for Barack Obama [9] .
Giovanna ’s sister is a writer, winner, and her cousin is a famous journalist [10] [11] .
Rewards
On September 24, 2003, the French ambassador handed Giovanna Melandry to the Palazzo Farnese the badge of the Legion of Honor officer in the presence of Giuliano Amato , Enrico Letta , Stefano Rodot , Ettore Skola and other prominent members of the public [12] .
