Biography

Stepan Ivanovich Povetkin was born on August 15, 1895 in the village of Russian Zhuravka (now the Verkhnemamonsky district of the Voronezh region).

World War I and Civil War

In 1915, he was drafted into the ranks of the Russian Imperial Army and sent to the 9th Infantry Regiment ( South-Western Front ), where after graduating from the training team he served as commander of a squad, platoon and company. In February 1918, the rank of ensign was demobilized from the army, after which he joined the Red Guard detachment at the liquidation commission in Kaluga , where he was appointed to the position of platoon commander.

In May, he was drafted into the ranks of the Red Army and appointed to the post of instructor for pre-conscription training of the Zhuravsky district military registration and enlistment office ( Voronezh province ), and in April 1919, to the post of junior commander of a separate combat engineer company of the Bogucharsky Rifle Regiment ( Southern Front ). Since September, Povetkin was treated in Penza in the 1928 evacuation hospital, and after recovering in February 1920, he returned to the Southern Front, served as unit commander and assistant platoon commander in the 1st strike regiment ( Exemplary Separate Rifle Brigade ). In May of the same year he was appointed to the position of platoon commander and temporarily serving as commander of the training battalion detachment in the 2nd Don Infantry Division , and in October - to the post of company commander of the 10th Infantry Regiment of the same division. He took part in the hostilities against troops under the command of generals A.I. Denikin , S.G. Ulagai , P.N. Wrangel and N.I. Makhno .

Interwar

In April 1921, Povetkin was sent to study for re-separation of the Krasnodar infantry courses of the command staff, after which he was sent to the 2nd Don Infantry Division ( North Caucasus Military District ), stationed in Novocherkassk , where he served as commander of a battalion and company in the 10th infantry regiment and platoon commander in the 4th Infantry Regiment, and since July 1922 - assistant commander and machine gun command chief of the 25th and 27th Infantry Regiments ( 9th Don Infantry Division ), stationed in Rostov-on-D onu .

In October 1924 he was sent to study at the Shooting and Tactical Shooting Tactical Courses, after which from 1925 he served as part of the 64th Rifle Regiment ( 22nd Krasnodar Rifle Division ), stationed in Armavir , as the head of the regimental school and the head machine gun team.

In January 1926 he was appointed commander of a machine-gun company and a one-year company in the Vladikavkaz infantry school , and in September 1931 he was assigned to the 74th infantry division , where he served as assistant commander for the combatant unit of the 220th and 221st infantry regiments, and since January 1933 - as commander of the 221st Infantry Regiment.

In August 1934 he was appointed to the post of military leader of the Rostov College of Physical Education , in November 1936 - to the post of commander of the battalion of the Leningrad military-political school , and in January 1937 - to the post of head of the course on the shooting and tactical courses " Shot ", simultaneously during since November, he studied at these courses, after which in July 1938 he was appointed to the post of commander of the 85th Rifle Division ( Ural Military District ), stationed in Chelyabinsk , in August of that year - to the post of commander 51- First Rifle Corps , stationed in Molotov , and in July 1940 - to the post of commander of the 47th Rifle Corps ( Western Military District ).

World War II

With the outbreak of war with Germany, the headquarters of the corps moved from Bobruisk to the Obuz-Lesn area, and soon received the task of uniting the defense of the Baranavichy direction under their command, but in an atmosphere of panic and loss of control, it could not establish contact with subordinate divisions. Having retreated to the east, on June 27, using auxiliary and retreating troops, S. I. Povetkin tried to organize the defense of Bobruisk , then the lines of the Berezina River , however, the combined detachment of the 47th Corps was rejected, and on June 29 S. I. Povetkin was seriously wounded [1 ] and evacuated to Moscow .

After being cured in December, he was appointed deputy commander of the rear of the 31st Army , from November 1942 - commander of the 6th Rifle Corps , conducting defensive military operations west of the city of Bely and participating in the Rzhev-Vyazemsky offensive operation . For the skillful command of the corps in these operations and the courage and heroism shown at the same time, Povetkin was awarded the Order of Suvorov, 2nd degree [2] .

In April 1943 he was appointed to the post of commander of the 19th Guards Rifle Corps , which participated in the Spas-Demensky and Yelninsky-Dorogobuzh offensive operations , and in November of the same year, to the post of deputy commander of the troops of the Belarusian Military District , however, by order of the USSR NCO of 27 February 1945, removed from office and in April appointed to the post of deputy commander of the 38th Guards Rifle Corps [3] , who took part in the Vienna and Prague offensive operations , during which he went to the Elbe .

Post-War Career

After the war he was in his former position.

Lieutenant General Stepan Ivanovich Povetkin in August 1946 left the reserve. He died on May 1, 1965 in Moscow .
