Augusta Magdalena is the daughter of Landgrave Ludwig VI of Hesse-Darmstadt and his wife Maria Elizabeth of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp , daughter of Duke Frederick III of Schleswig-Holstein-Gottorp . Like her father and sister Magdalena Sibylla , Augusta Magdalena was fond of literary work: she translated the psalms of David , wrote a poetry collection “Door to German Poetry” ( Die Thür zur deutschen Poesie ). She died at 17 and was buried in the Darmstadt City Church.
