Content
early years
Conor Anthony McGregor was born in the southern part of Dublin, in the suburbs of Kramlin , where he first became interested in sports, in particular football . McGregor played for the Luders Celtic football club and cheered for the English Premier League club Manchester United . [3]
In 2006, he moved with his family to Lucan , where McGregor graduated from Colaiste Cois Life High School. After graduation, he began to study the profession of a plumber [4] . Later in Lucan, McGregor began to learn how to deal with future UFC fighter Tom Egan. So McGregor became interested in mixed martial arts [5] . In 2008, he joined the SBG team.
Career
McGregor began his professional career in mixed martial arts with lightweight performances. Later, having earned ten victories with two defeats in career statistics, he made his debut in the category below, where in two fights he managed to win the featherweight champion of the English organization “Cage Warriors”. Without stopping at one title, McGregor returned to the previous division, where he took the lightweight title from Ivan Buchinger , thus becoming the simultaneous champion in two weight categories.
Ultimate fight championship
Impressed by the Irishman’s speeches, the UFC management soon signed a contract with him [6] . The debut fight in the new organization took place on UFC on Fuel TV: Mousasi vs. Latifi , where Marcus Brimage became McGregor's rival. The battle was accompanied by vigorous attacks by Brimage, who, however, was unable to oppose the exact and technical attacks of the Irishman. After hitting the opponent with a series of heavy punches in the jaw, McGregor dumped him on the floor and began to finish, after which the referee stopped the match.
The next fight was scheduled for UFC Fight Night 26 , where a meeting was expected against the Englishman Andy Ogl. After some time, Ogl was forced to withdraw due to an injury and was replaced by Max Holloway [7] . McGregor completely dominated the fight and won a landslide victory over Holloway. In the middle of the second round, McGregor felt a crunch in his knee, after an MRI he was diagnosed with an injury to the anterior cruciate ligament , which is why doctors imposed a ban on performances for the next ten months. [eight]
After completing the medical recovery, McGregor led the main event of the evening UFC Fight Night 46 in his native Dublin . Initially, Cole Miller was supposed to be his rival, but he earned a thumb injury in training, so he was forced to retire. Cole's place was taken by the Brazilian Diego Brandan [9] . The match was won by MacGregor ahead of schedule - by technical knockout in the first round.
As part of the UFC 178 tournament , McGregor won another victory by technical knockout. This time, an American fighter Dustin Poirier fell under the onslaught of the Irish, who had never been knocked out before. Throughout the fight, McGregor shot the enemy with strikes from a distance until he knocked him out in the second minute of the first round. Later, UFC president Dana White said that McGregor could become the main contender for the featherweight title if the fight between the current champion José Aldou and Chad Mendes at UFC 179 won Alda. [ten]
A month after the victory over Poirier, the organization announced the UFC Fight Night 59 tournament, which will lead McGregor's fight with German fighter Dennis Siefer [11] . According to the forecasts of the bookmakers, McGregor opened in this battle as an absolute favorite [12] . The Irishman ended the match unilaterally by defeating Siefer by technical knockout in the second round. Immediately after that, he stunned the audience with an incident with reigning champion Jose Aldo. As soon as the referee stopped the bout, McGregor saw Alda in the audience and, jumping over the octagon grid, began to shout something at the champion's face.
Interim Featherweight Champion
At the end of January 2015, the date of the fight for the UFC featherweight champion title between McGregor and Aldu became known. The fight was supposed to take place on July 11, 2015 and lead the UFC 189 tournament [13] . And in March, a twelve-day world tour was held in eight cities of the world (starting from Rio de Janeiro and ending with Dublin ), designed to advertise the upcoming tournament. The world tour turned out to be dramatic and rich in all kinds of attacks by McGregor against Aldou: it all started with a tense battle of views in Rio [14] , and reached its climax during a press conference in the Irish capital, when MacGregor snatched his champion belt off the table of the Brazilian. [15]
On June 23, it became known that Aldu received a rib fracture during training, and for this reason the battle can be canceled [16] . In this case, the leadership prepared to replace Alda in the person of two-time NCAA medalist in wrestling Chad Mendes , who would fight with MacGregor for the title of interim featherweight champion [17] . On June 30, Dana White confirmed the message that Aldu would not be able to fight and was eliminated from the tournament, and Mendes would replace him [18] . McGregor continued the series of wins by knockout, defeating Mendes and becoming the interim UFC featherweight champion.
The Ultimate Fighter 22
After winning the interim title, McGregor took part in the twenty-second season of the reality show “ The Ultimate Fighter ” (TUF 22) as a coach for the European team. In the television show, he said that he was participating only because of his teammate and sparring partner Artyom Lobov, who later became the TUF 22 finalist and the current UFC fighter.
Featherweight Champion
In August 2015, the organization announced a new date for a meeting between McGregor and Alda. The previously failed match this time was to lead the UFC 194 tournament. At a GO BIG press conference on upcoming tournaments, McGregor said that if he won the undisputed champion title with Aldo, he would move to the lightweight category [19] . On December 12, the long-awaited battle nevertheless took place, however, to the surprise of many fans, it ended earlier than many had expected. Just in the thirteenth second of the first round, McGregor made an accurate counterattack in the jaw, forcing Alda to fall on the canvas, and interrupted his five-year dominance as a champion.
Having won the title of undisputed champion, McGregor led UFC 196 , where he was initially declared as a contender for the lightweight title against current champion Rafael Dus Anjus . February 23, 2016 it became known that Dus Anjus injured his leg during sparring and was forced to withdraw from the fight. A day later, the organization found a replacement for the injured champion in the person of Nate Diaz , but the fight took place already in the welterweight division [20] . Earlier, McGregor's trainer stated that his ward was able to fight and welterweight against champion Robbie Lawler . [21]
The duel began with McGregor's active attacks with both arms and legs. The Irishman’s activity was also in full control of the center of the octagon and in the desire to reduce the distance. In the second half of the first round, he cut an eyebrow for Diaz, however, the initiative began to flow into the hands of the opponent. This became noticeable in the mistakes of McGregor and the frequent hits of Diaz by jabs . The round ended on the stalls, the transfer to which Diaz initiated, capturing the Irish's leg. However, this did not prevent McGregor from being on top, trying in the last seconds to strike at the defending enemy. In the second round, he again began to storm Diaz and even stained his face with blood, but in the middle of five minutes McGregor was shocked by the opponent's two, although he tried not to show it. Diaz began to increase pressure, he pressed the Irish to the wall and began to beat him. McGregor, freed from the clinch, in turn answered with a good combination, and then frantically threw himself at Diaz's feet. The match flowed to the ground where the Irishman failed to resist and fell for a strangulation, having suffered his first defeat within the UFC.
According to McGregor, he will probably hold his next bout in featherweight, where he will defend his championship title. [22]
(during the break of the final match of the World Cup on July 15, 2018, Luzhniki )
On April 19, 2016, McGregor announced his retirement, posting it on Twitter . “I decided to leave the sport young. Thanks to everyone. See you later". [23]
On April 21, 2016, McGregor announced on his Facebook page [24] that he was not going to finish his career and was ready to speak at the UFC 200 if he was allowed to hold only one press conference and then return to training.
August 20, 2016 at the UFC 202 tournament: Diaz vs. Mcgregor 2 [25] had a rematch with Nate Diaz , in which McGregor won the decision of the majority.
On September 27, it was officially announced that McGregor would conduct his next fight against lightweight champion Eddie Alvarez on November 12 at UFC 205 [26] . McGregor defeated Alvarez in the second round by technical knockout and became the first simultaneously two-time champion in UFC history. Received the sixth performance of the evening bonus. [27]
On November 26, it was announced that due to inaction in the featherweight division, McGregor released the champion belt, and interim champion Jose Aldou became the undisputed champion. [28]
On October 6, 2018, as part of UFC 229, he was defeated by reigning lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov by a strangulation from behind.
At the end of January 2019, the Nevada Athletic Commission issued a verdict to disqualify Conor McGregor for 6 months with the payment of a $ 50,000 fine for an incident after a fight with Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229 [29] .
On March 26, 2019, Conor McGregor announced his retirement as a professional fighter and his desire to focus on another business. However, many experts were skeptical of this statement, since by this moment the battle involving Conor is able to collect cash only by name, and not by the status of a professional fighter. [thirty]
March 31, 2019 McGregor challenged Hollywood actor Mark Wahlberg to a duel [31] .
Professional boxing
In May 2016, Conor McGregor announced his desire to try his hand at professional boxing [32] . Soon after, there was talk of a fight against the former best boxer, regardless of the weight category of Floyd Mayweather . In July 2017, it became known that the fighters agreed on the conditions of the battle [33] . Soon the battle took place, which McGregor lost.
Fight with Floyd Mayweather
Floyd Mayweather won. In the tenth round, after a series of kicks from Mayweather, the referee stopped the fight, which meant Mayweather won by TKO. [34]
