Biography
Aurel Makarenku was born on March 8, 1963 in the village of Krishan of Tulcea county.
He achieved his first serious success at the adult international level in 1985, when he joined the main team of the Romanian national team and attended the World Championships in the Belgian Mechelen, from where he brought two bronze medals won in the standings of single canoes at distances of 500 and 1000 meters. A year later, at the world championship in Canadian Montreal, he went up to the podium three times: he received silver alone at five hundred meters, as well as gold alone at one thousand and ten thousand meters.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, Makarenko was awarded the right to defend the country's honor at the 1988 Summer Olympics in Seoul - in the lone canoe program he started at five hundred and a thousand meters - in the first case he finished sixth in the final, in the second case he showed fifth in the decisive race, not reaching the prize positions a bit. Soon after the end of the Seoul Olympics, he decided to end his sports career, giving way to young Romanian rowers in the national team.
