Tori Kelly ( born Tori Kelly , born December 14, 1992 , , Riverside , California , USA ) is an American singer , songwriter and music producer . Gained recognition at the age of 14 after posting her videos on YouTube . At the age of 16, Kelly underwent a musical casting for the American Idol television show . After leaving the show, Kelly began working on her own music and in 2012 released her first self-produced, written and mixed EP under the title “Handmade Songs By Tori Kelly”. The following year, after watching her YouTube video, Scooter Brown became manager Kelly. He brought her to the Capitol Records label , with whom she signed a contract in September 2013. The second EP of the singer was Foreword , released in October 2013 as her first release on a major label. Kelly’s first album, Unbreakable Smile , was released on June 23, 2015. The lead single, Nobody Love , was released in the spring and became her first track to hit the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States. Kelly was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best New Artist at the 58th Grammy Awards .

Life and career

Born in Wildomar, California. Her father, Ellwin Kelly, is Jamaican and half Puerto Rican, and her mother, Laura Kelly-Carlson, is of Irish-German descent. [1] Participated in the television show Star Search . Together with vocalist Tiffany Evans, she earned the title of Junior Champion in the junior singing division, but did not win the competition.

In 2004, she took part in America's Most Talented Kid , performing the song “Keep on Singin 'My Song” by Christina Aguilera and won the competition, beating musician Hunter Hayes . Her second performance was participation in the Champions Tournament, but did not win, losing to rock musician Antonio Pontarelli . At the age of 12, Kelly was offered a contract with Geffen Records and she accepted it, but due to a conflict of ideas, it was by mutual agreement terminated. [2] In 2007, from the age of 14, Kelly began publishing her videos on YouTube . The first video was the song “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” compiled by John Wesley Work, Jr. , which she originally performed in 2004. Kelly was recognized for her acoustic sounding of the song “Thinkin about You” by singer Frank Ocean . [3] [4]

Despite her brief participation in American Idol, she dropped out of the show before reaching 24th place, but found a different path to fame. Kelly learned to play the guitar, combining fragments of the original songs, and recorded them using her personal computer. At that time, for several days there was a viral advertisement of her videos. Tori Kelly began sharing her videos on YouTube and, thanks to her musical talent, her page attracted 700 thousand subscribers. [five]

2010-2013

In 2010, Kelly auditioned for the 4th season of the American Idol television show in Denver, Colorado and a week in Hollywood, but was not included in the top 24 artists. She stated that she was devastated, but gave the project all of herself. She immediately started working on new compositions, and then she was invited to perform the 1985 charity single “ We Are the World ”, entitled “We Are the World: The Next Generation”. Former judge Simon Cowell found Kelly's voice “almost annoying,” but that did not stop the singer from continuing to write more songs.

On May 1, 2012, Tori Kelly released her first EP, Handmade Songs By Tori Kelly , which contains 6 songs from her own label Toraay Records. Kelly herself was the producer of her first album, and recorded the EP in her bedroom. When it was released on iTunes, it took Top 10 Pop Albums. Kelly later said that she was most proud of having done everything herself. “It was something, I knew what I needed to do to prove to myself that I could do it myself ...” [6] She calls her EP “warm up” of the full-length album, which is due out in the future. The EP has sold over 14,000 copies and “reached No. 9 on the Billboard's Heatseekers album chart”

In February, Kelly released a single entitled “Fill a Heart”, which she wrote for “Child Hunger Ends Here.” Since April 2013, Kelly has performed in 8 different cities in America on the Fill a Heart tour. Tori Kelly has performed in cities such as Troubador and the Roxy in Los Angeles, the Gramercy Theater in New York and Bush Hall in London. She has also been featured in magazines such as Teen Vogue, Elle, and Glamor. In mid-2013, Tori Kelly had a new manager, Scooter Braun , who introduced Tori Kelly Capitol Records . She was “very skeptical” about signing up with a major label in fear that things would not work in her favor, as was the case in her career. “I was burned until I met these wonderful guys, I never felt that way: they really were my fans.” On September 6, 2013, she signed with Capitol Records . 2013-Present: Unbreakable Smile

In September 2013, Kelly announced at The Today Show that her second debut album, EP Foreword , would be released on October 22, 2013 via Capitol Records . The EP has sold more than 16,000 copies and "debut [ed] at No. 16 on the Billboard 200. " [8] Kelly was the only support for Ed Sheeran at Madison Square Garden on November 1, 2013, and support for Sam Smith on his 'In the Lonely Hour' UK tour in October 2014. [9]

Kelly wrote and recorded the song “Silent” for The Giver: Music Collection , in support of the adaptation of The Giver of the novel The Giver , which was released on iTunes on August 5, 2014. [10] On August 7, 2014, Kelly recorded a live acoustic version for your YouTube channel; hits to date 1,426,619. [11] The single Kelly was featured on Professor Green 's " Lullaby " which was released on September 14, 2014. Debuting in Top 40. Throughout 2014, Kelly worked with Scooter Braun on her debut album, to which she received contributions from Toby Gad , Max Martin , and Ed Sheeran . Since May 2018, Kelly has been married to basketball player Andre Murillo [16] .
