Biography

Born in Kagarlyk, Kiev region. In 1955 he graduated from the Taras Shevchenko Republican Art School, and in 1964 - the faculty of monumental painting of the Lviv Institute of Applied and Decorative Arts ^[1] .

For his first illustrations to the works of Ivan Franko , created in 1963-1969 ^[2] , Eugene Beznisko was included in the list of unreliable, but for the same drawings in 2006 he was awarded the Shevchenko Prize ^[3] .

For about 40 years, Eugene Beznisko worked on etchings and linocuts based on the works of Ivan Franko (the poems “Moses”, “The Death of Cain”, “Barsky Jokes”, “Botanical Hoods”, “Funeral”, “Christ and the Cross”, “Cutter.” Kamenyary ", etc.), Lesia Ukrainka (the drama" Forest Song "," Babylonian Captivity "," In the Catacombs "," Obsessed "," On the Field of Blood ", etc.), Vasily Stefanik . In 2005, after a trip to Egypt, Beznisko walked along the paths of Frank's “Moses”, rethought this work, and created a series of color works using the technique of pastel drawing ^[2] ^[3] .

In 1997 and 2004, Eugene Beznisko worked in the Chernobyl zone , where he wrote several dozen works, including 45 pastels . He presented 56 works written in Chernobyl to the Lviv Ethnographic Museum ^[4] . Beznisko created a bronze copy of the monument to Daniil of Galich in Vladimir-Volynsky , and also painted a portrait of Cardinal Joseph the Blind , which were donated to Pope John Paul II ^[5] .

The author of 19 solo exhibitions, the first of which was held in 1969 ^[4] . The author of several thousand paintings on various topics ^[4] . His works are kept in museums in the USA, Argentina, Canada, and France. Repeatedly participated in exhibitions in Ukraine and abroad ^[5] .

Reviews

In linocuts of the Moses series, the author found an individual style, a monumental style, consonant with the epic pathos of the poem. Engravings consistently reveal the main situations and leading ideas of the work. Concisely and concentratedly, without excessive detailing, individual episodes of the narrative are depicted. The artist managed to give expression to faces, silhouettes of figures an exciting, deeply dramatic sound. The archaic, biblical theme of the work, obviously, prompted the artist the idea to turn to Ukrainian icon painting. Hence some conventions in individual compositions, in particular, in the image of Moses himself. But the artist managed to find the necessary measure, limiting himself to only a few tricks to emphasize the most significant, quite modern interpretation of the image.

In the linocuts of the serie Мой Moysey ’, the author has expressed a distinctive handwriting, monumental, sounding epic to the pathos sing a style. Lviv artist Evgeni Beznisko in his work appears as a unique creator with expressively national features. Rooted in the national tradition, he expands the horizons of Ukrainian contemporary art with his art collection.
The cycle of works based on the poem by Ivan Franko "Moses" is a great artistic and aesthetic value and is a significant achievement of modern Ukrainian art culture. These works answer key questions and morals, which makes them a fact of new achievements of Ukrainian intellectual thought of the 21st century.

Personal life

In 1959 ^[4] he married the artist and sculptor Theodosia Brig, whose workshop in the 1960s was the cultural center of the Lviv intelligentsia. Theodosia was a connected UPA . Together with her, Beznisko designed the memorial cemetery of Sich Riflemen on Mount Makovka, a memorial chapel for the victims of the NKVD in Zolochiv Castle and a monument to Daniil Galitsky ^[2] ^[8] .

In 1961 ^[4] , the son of Yarema was born to Theodosia and Eugene Beznisko, who took part in some of the artist's projects ^[9] . In 1962, their son Maxim was born ^[4] .

In 2003, Eugene Beznisko married Les Glushko ^[4] .
