Biography
Bernd Hessel was born on July 3, 1961 in Munich . He began to actively engage in rowing in early childhood, was trained in Berlin at the capital's eponymous sports club “Berlin”.
He achieved his first serious success at the adult international level in 1982, when he joined the national team of the Federal Republic of Germany and attended the World Championships in Yugoslav Belgrade, from where he brought the bronze dignity, won in fours at a distance of 1000 meters - while his partners were Mattias rowers Seeak , Oliver Seeak and Frank Renner . Better in the final race only the crews of Sweden and the GDR finished.
Thanks to a series of successful performances, Hessel gained the right to defend the country's honor at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles - as part of a four-seater crew, which also included rowers Oliver Kegel , Detlef Schmidt and Rainer Scholl , reached the final stage of the kilometer program, but in the decisive race showed only the eighth result. Soon after the end of these competitions, he decided to end the career of a professional athlete, giving way to young German rowers in the national team.
