Biography

Martin Gardner was born and raised in the vicinity of Tulsa , Oklahoma , USA . He attended college at the University of Chicago , where he received a bachelor 's degree in philosophy [3] . During World War II, he served for several years in the US Navy as a ship secretary, or , aboard the USS Pope, an escort destroyer in the Atlantic Ocean. His ship was in the ocean at the time of the end of the war and the surrender of Japan in August 1945 .

After the war, Gardner again visited the University of Chicago [4] . During the year he also studied at the magistracy, but did not defend the next degree.

For several decades, Martin, with his wife Charlotte and two sons, lived in Hastings-on-Hudson , earning a living by literary work, publishing his books in a number of publishing houses and writing hundreds of articles for various magazines and newspapers. Interestingly, they lived on Euclid Avenue. In 1979, the couple moved to Hendersonville (North Carolina . His wife died in 2000 .

In the early 1950s, Gardner was the editor of Humpty Dumpty and wrote essays and stories for several children's magazines [5] . His paper folding tasks led to his work at Scientific American [6] .

In 2002, Martin Gardner returned to Norman (Oklahoma) , where his son, James Gardner, worked as a professor of education at the University of Oklahoma [7] .

Martin Gardner died on May 22, 2010 in Norman. [2]

Works

He was a leader in the section of mathematical games and entertainment of Scientific American magazine, in which the Life game, invented by John Conway , was presented to the general public, as well as many other interesting games, tasks, and puzzles.

Gardner's articles and books on entertaining mathematics are particularly popular. Gardner interpreted entertainment as a synonym for fascinating, interesting in cognition, but alien to idle entertainment.

Also known as the author of several science fiction stories (“The Island of Five Colors”, “Zero-Sided Professor”), commentator Lewis Carroll (“ Alice in Wonderland ”, “ Alice in the Looking Glass ” and “ Hunting the Snark ”) and Gilbert Chesterton (“The Man, which was Thursday ”and“ Ignorance of Father Brown ”).

Among Gardner's works there are philosophical essays, essays on the history of mathematics, mathematical tricks and "comics", popular science sketches, science fiction stories, tasks on quick wits.

Gardner's style is characterized by lucidity, brightness, persuasiveness of presentation, brilliance, paradox of thought, novelty and depth of scientific ideas, many of which are gleaned from modern scientific publications and, in turn, have become an incentive for serious research, active involvement of the reader in independent creativity.
