Temecula is a city in Riverside County , California , USA . The population is 109,428 people (2014). Ranks 5th in the list of cities in the county with the largest number of residents, 59th in the same list for California and 259th in the same list for the United States . The name of the city comes from the Indian word Temeekung , which translates as "Place of the Sun" [3] or as "Place where the Sun shines through the fog" [4] .

Geography, transport
Temecula is located in the southwestern part of the so-called Inner Empire . From the north-west, Temecula borders on the city of Murrieta , from the west, south and southeast, hills approach the city, and from the east - vineyards. The area of the city is 78.13 km², including 0.04 km² (0.05%) of open water. The city has 39 parks [5] .
A large motorway I-15 [6] , and motorways pass through the city, and Murrieta Airport ( French Valley ) provides air services [7] .
Climate
The city has a Mediterranean climate ( Csa according to Köppen ) [8] . August is the hottest month; December is the coldest. The rainy season lasts from November to March with a peak in February (94 mm), the driest month is June (less than 1 mm), on average 359 mm of rain falls on the city per year. In winter, storms are frequent, especially during the “ El Niño years ”. In the morning of May and June, the marine layer climatic phenomenon is often observed. From November to February, Temecula is dominated by the dry northeast . Snow rarely falls over the city, although November and December 2014, when real snowfall fell on Temecula, can serve as an exception [9] [10] . An exceptional climatic phenomenon was a tornado, which visited the city on February 19, 2005 [11] . The maximum air temperature recorded in the city was 46 ° С, the minimum - -10 ° С [12] [13] .
History
In 1797, the father of Juan Norberto de Santiago and the captain Pedro Lisalde, together with seven soldiers and five Indians, reached the Temecula Valley. The group was looking for a place to establish another mission. It was then that the holy father made an entry in his diary about the discovery of an “Indian village called Temecula” [14] . In 1845, the last governor of Upper California , , granted one Pablo Apis an area of just over 9 km² [15] [16] .
April 22, 1859 in Temecula, in the building of the store, the first post office was opened - it became the second post office in the state, second only to San Francisco . In 1882, the Pechanga Indian Reservation was founded with an area of about 16 km², about 13 kilometers from the town.
In 1904, the Temecula Ranch, Little Temecula and several neighboring ones were bought by a certain Walter L. Wile. In 1906, he died in a traffic accident in Los Angeles , but his case was continued by his son, Malon, who, together with others founded and in 1914 opened the First National Bank of Temecula . In 1910, the Catholic parish of Saints Katerina and Alexandria was founded in Temecula, in 1917 a chapel appeared. Due to the growing number of parishioners, the church soon moved to another place, and sold this chapel to the Museum of the Old Town for one dollar [17] . In 1915, the first asphalt two-lane road appeared in the town. By 1947, the area of possession of Malon Wile was about 354 km² with the center in Temecula. In 1948, a dam was constructed to block the and create the reservoir (an area of about 4.5 km², a volume of 42–63 million m³), which solved the problem of lack of water in Temecula [18] . In 1964, Wile Ranch was sold to the Kaiser Aetna partnership [19] . Soon, land ownership was expanded to 395 km² and was called California Ranch . In the early 1980s, the I-15 motorway was built through Temecula, which led to a sharp increase in population: over a decade, the population of the town grew more than 15 times, from 1.8 to 27.1 thousand people.
In 1989, the first church of appeared in Temecula [20] . On December 1, 1989, the California Ranch settlement was incorporated with the name Temecula (70% voted for this name, less than 11% voted for California Ranch ) [21] and the status “city” [22] . In 2005, the area of the city and its population increased dramatically (up to 90,000 people) due to the annexation of the nearby settlement of Redhawk [23] [24] . In 2010, the mark of 100,000 inhabitants was overcome. On May 15, 2015, in the city, in the Pechanga casino, the Bellator MMA mixed martial arts competition was held [25] [26] .

According to the 2010 census , 100,097 people lived in Temecula: 49,002 males and 51,095 females. 30.7% of the population were under the age of 18 and 7.8% were over 65, the average age of a city dweller was 33.4 years. For 100 females there were 95.9 males, and for 100 adult females there were already 93.9 males of comparable age. Racial composition : white - 70.8%, blacks and African Americans - 4.1%, native Americans - 1.1%, Asians - 9.8%, Pacific Islander - 0.4%, other races - 7.9% , mixed races - 5.9%, Hispanics (of any race) - 24.7%.
The city had 25,826 families and 31,781 households, 50.2% of them were children under 18 years of age. 64.5% of households were heterosexual couples who were married and living together, 11.8% were women - heads of household without a husband, 5% - men - heads of household without a wife, 4.6% were heterosexual couples living together by marriage and 0.6% were same-sex couples living in a marriage or in a civil marriage. The average household size was 3.15 people, families - 3.46 people [37] .

According to 2013 estimates, 106,780 people lived in Temecula: 48.2% of males and 51.8% of females. The average age of a city dweller was 32.9 years, with an average statewide indicator of 35 years. The average household income in 2009–2013 was $ 78,356 a year, 8.5% of citizens lived below the poverty line [38] .

The inhabitants of the city reported the origin of their ancestors as follows: Germans - 11.1%, Irish - 8.9%, British - 7%, Italians - 3.4%, Poles - 2.6%, French - 2.1%. A survey of residents over 15 years of age showed that 33.9% of city dwellers are single and never married, 53.9% are married and live together, 1.6% are married, but live separately, 2.9 % are widowed and 7.6% are divorced.
14.8% of the population was born outside the United States, with an average statewide rate of 27.1%.
As of June 2014, unemployment in the city was 5.7%, with an average statewide indicator of 7.3% [39] .
