Biography
Timothy Zahn grew up in the western suburbs of Lombard. He attended Michigan State University in East Lansing, Michigan , received a bachelor 's degree in physics ( 1973 ), then moved to the University of Illinois (Champaign-Urbana, Illinois ) for graduation. There, the young man received a master's degree ( 1975 ), again, in physics, and continued to work, this time on his doctoral dissertation. Also in 1975, he had a new hobby: writing science fiction. At first, Timothy devoted only his free time to his hobby, but after the next three years, he gradually began to give it more and more time until he sold his first work in December 1978 (Ernie, Analog, 1979 , September) .
While still working on a possible career in the field of physics, he was increasingly thinking of taking academic leave after receiving his doctorate, conducting a “great experiment” to see how much writing could entice him.
This year came earlier than the young man expected. In July 1979, his supervisor suddenly died of a heart attack. Ironically, on the same day, Zan received a notice that his second work was bought by "Analog".
Three years of work on the dissertation were completely destroyed. Then during the semester, the writer began to work on a new topic, trying to stir up his enthusiasm for work. But by this time writing books for Timothy Zahn was much more interesting than physics, and in January 1980 he left the university and began the “great experiment”.
With his wife, Anna, working all the time to support the family, Zahn wrote 18 works that first year, which brought him more than $ 2000. Since he initially set himself a goal of $ 1000, he decided to declare the "experiment" successfully completed. From that moment on, it was no longer a question of whether Zan could ultimately earn his living by writing, as was the case during the “experiment”.
Since then, Zan received the Hugo Award for the Cascade point story and was nominated twice more. The writer is best known to the world for his five books from the Star Wars series: The Heir to the Empire, Revival of Darkness, Last Order, Ghost of the Past, Image of the Future.
Zahn is also known for the recently published books Angelass, The Gift of Jupiter, Dragon and the Thief (the first of six parts of the teenage and youth science fiction series). Timothy Zahn now lives with his family on the coast, Oregon.
