Biography

Samvel Manasyan was born in 1907 in Western Armenia , in the village of Kem, of the Van province , of the Ottoman Empire [1] .

In 1929 he entered the Leningrad Higher Artistic and Technical Institute , which he graduated in 1933 [2] .

Combined creative activity with pedagogical, led a sculpture circle at the Palace of Pioneers of Yerevan [3] .

With the beginning of World War II , in 1941, he went to the front. In 1944, after demobilization, he actively continued his pedagogical activity and work on the creation of sculptural works in Armenia [2] .

He was a member of the Union of Artists of the USSR and the Armenian SSR , in 1967 he was awarded the title of Honored Art Worker of the Armenian SSR [4] .

He died on April 20, 1979 in Yerevan .

Creativity

Samvel Manasyan worked mainly in the field of monumental and easel sculpture.

He is the author of sculptural portraits of political and public figures, of which monuments can be noted [2] :

  • Y. Sverdlov ( basalt , 1960, National Art Gallery of Armenia , Yerevan )
  • G. Atarbekyan (basalt, 1961, Norashen village)
  • V.I. Lenin (basalt, 1966).

Noteworthy are his works such as:

  • Motherland (basalt, 1945, Yerevan)
  • Sculptural portrait of the worker S. Manukyan (basalt, 1952, National Art Gallery of Armenia , Yerevan)
  • Bust of Nar-Dos (basalt, 1956, in front of the school after Nar-Dos , Yerevan) [5]
  • Together with sculptors Arsham Shaginyan , Ara Harutyunyan and architect Rafael Israelyan in 1968 he created a monument to the heroes of the Sardarapat battle - the Sardarapat Memorial complex in Armavir . [6] . In 1969, the Sardarapat Memorial Complex was nominated for the USSR State Prize .
