Sports career

Bacagliao got his first point from an international master in 2008 at the Cuban Moncada Cup tournament, and shortly after that he took second place at an international tournament in his native province of Matanzas, ahead of, in particular, grandmaster Juri González . He earned the third necessary point for obtaining the title of international master with reaching the final of the national championship of Cuba in 2009, and there he created a sensation, dividing 1-4 places (according to additional indicators, he did not enter the number of winners [2] ). Thus, he first fulfilled the grandmaster norm, not even having received the title of international master (by the time of his assignment, Bakagliao had already completed 11 necessary normative standards) [3] .

Having become an international master in 2010, already in 2012, Bacagliao received the title of Grandmaster. This happened after winning the international tournament in La Rode (Spain), where the Cuban shared the first place with grandmasters Sergei Fedorchuk and Julio Grande , ahead of them in additional indicators [4] . Successful performances allowed Bacagliao to join the Cuban national team at the Istanbul Chess Olympiad [5] , where he scored four points in six games played [6] . Later that year, he took part in the championship of South America, remaining among the contenders for medals up to the last round, but eventually dividing only 11-26 places [7] . At the beginning of 2013, Bacagliao again came close to the winners of the Cuban championship, but again failed to get on the podium, enjoying the fourth place [8] .

In 2017, taking seventh place in the absolute continental championship, Bacagliao won (along with Lazaro Bruson and Yuri Gonzalez) the right to participate in the World Cup , held in September in Tbilisi [9] .
