History
Huhtamäki's history dates back to 1920, when 20-year-old Heikki Huhtamäki ( Fin. Heikki Huhtamäki ) took out a bank loan and opened a small candy factory in Kokkola . In the early 1930s, Huhtamäki absorbed several bakeries in Turku and subsequently produced a wide range of confectionery products . In 1940, Huhtamäki took over the pharmaceutical company Leiras, and in 1954 the manufacturer of liquors and other alcoholic beverages, the company Marli. In 1960, Huhtamäki acquired the Mensa factory in the city of Hämeenlinna , which specializes in the production of meat and fish semi-finished products. Mensa had a number of technological developments in the field of packaging and storage of food products, on this technological base a subsidiary Polarpak (later Polarcup) was formed, which specialized in the production of packaging. In 1970-1980 Huhtamäki has expanded its investment range to the point of expressing interest in assets in the metals and electronic components industries.
In the 1990s Huhtamäki has sold a significant portion of its previously acquired assets and has focused on food packaging. In 1999, Huhtamäki merged with the Dutch food packaging manufacturer Royal Packaging Industries Van Leer, changing its name to Huhtamäki Van Leer Oyj. But a year later, the assets of the Dutch side were separated into a separate structure of Van Leer Industrial and sold to the American company Greif Brothersille, after which Huhtamäki regained its former name. In April 2012, Huhtamäki took over the Chinese food packaging and disposable tableware manufacturer Josco, and in August of that year, the American manufacturer Winterfieldin. Over its 90-year history, the company has carried out more than 200 acquisitions and sales of various assets [2] .
