Benefits
The license is similar to BSD, MIT, UoI / NCSA and Apache License; but was written to fix the problems of these licenses:
- Explains that copyright is reserved.
- Includes full software copyright package.
- Contains patent grant.
- Explains that it does not transfer trademark rights.
- It guarantees that the licensor either has copyrights for this software or distributes the software under license.
- The license itself is protected by copyright with the ability to copy and distribute without modification.
History
The Free Software Foundation indicates a license incompatibility up to version 3.0 with the GNU GPL license [1] . However, Eric Raymond (OSI co-founder) notes that AFI 3.0 is compatible with the GNU GPL [3] . At the end of 2002, the OSI working group noted the “best practice” for this license [4] . In mid-2006, the OSI committee noted the license as unnecessary when there are similar and more popular ones (for example, the Apache Software License of the second faith) [2] .
