- Michael Schumacher was in the lead in the race, but at the last moment he caught up with Rubens Barrichello to make a simultaneous finish, and lost to him a negligible fraction of a second. This gap between 1 and 2 places is the smallest in the history of Formula 1 (along with the Italian Grand Prix of 1971 , where the gap was 0.01 s).
