Biography
Graduate of Charles University (1919). Since 1930 - professor in alma mater . He lectured in English and literature at the Faculty of Arts of the University of Prague.
One of the founders of the Prague Linguistic Circle (1926), its first secretary and one of the most prominent representatives of the Prague Linguistic School.
Scientific activity
The main works in the field of German studies , mainly English ( phonology , syntax ). He conducted linguistic research in the field of general linguistics, synchronous phonology, historical linguistics (diachronic phonology and morphology), synchronous morphology, syntax and statistical linguistics. Dr. Trnka's research is a significant contribution to the development of linguistic thought in the 20th century.
In the field of theoretical linguistics, Trnka developed the ideas of a functional approach to language. Author of studies on English literature (History of English Literature, vols. 1–4, 2nd ed., 1959–1965).
He is the author of several textbooks of English, Dutch, Danish, Norwegian and Swedish languages and publications on shorthand .
