Michael Scott is considered one of the most respected experts on the folklore of the Celtic lands. He is credited with a revival of interest in Celtic mythology in the mid-1980s. Irish Folk & Fairy Tales, Irish Myths & Legends, and Irish Ghosts & Hauntings are constantly reprinted over the past 20 years and are currently included in the final and most frequently cited works in this area.

Horror novels "Banshee", "Image", "Reflection", "Imp" and "Hallows" (in Russian translation - "Shrines") are considered classics of the genre and are largely based on encyclopedic knowledge of folklore. In the United States, Scott’s dilogy “The Arcana” received many positive reviews, and Publishers Weekly said it “demonstrates how good fantasy can be.” Beloved of the Gods, an innovative dark fantasy that takes place in the previously uncharted world of ancient Etruria before the Roman Empire , and The Merchant Prince, a historical fantasy of the Elizabethan era in England, can provide an insight into the breadth of writing interests of Michael Scott . Recently, in the Irish Times, he was called the "Fantasy King of these islands."

Michael Scott is an experienced screenwriter and leads the drama department at Tyrone Productions, the creators of Riverdance. He wrote for theater and cinema, as well as scripts for documentaries for television. He worked on professional scenarios for events such as the Special Olympics held in Ireland in 2002 and the Irish Film and Television Awards.

In May 2007, Random House published The Alchemyst, followed by The Magician (2008) and The Sorceress (2009). New Line Productions has acquired rights for the future film adaptation of as many as six books in the series, although only four have been published so far. The year of the last release of the book at the moment coincided with the release of the first novel about the adventures of Nicolas Flamel in Russian.

For his “invaluable contribution to children's literature,” Michael Scott is mentioned in the honorary edition of Who's Who in Ireland as one of the 1,000 most significant Irishmen.
