History
Born April 1, 1923 in Chicago , Illinois in a family of Ukrainian immigrants. [2]
In childhood, he suffered from amblyopia and polio , but at the age of 16 he managed to graduate from Hyde Park High School . [2] From an early age, he liked to write and until his admission to Wilson College worked as a criminal reporter for the Chicago Sun-Times . [2]
In 1942, he was called up for service in the US Army Aviation and continued to engage in writing without leaving the country. [2] The first novel he published under his real name was called Three Days Later. Prior to this, he published his first novel, “Lie like a Lady,” under the pseudonym K. C. Cody. [2]
After the war, he received a bachelor’s degree in humanities from the University of Chicago and a master’s degree in American literature from Columbia University . [2] Married Louise Hetzel, with whom he moved to New York, where in 1953 he released his second novel, “Phoenix Island”. [2] Two daughters, Elizabeth and Susan, were born in the marriage. [1] After a divorce from Hetzel, Waller in 1967 married the photographer and actress Patricia Mahen, with whom they moved to Calabria in 1978, where they lived 11 years before moving to London . [2]
After fifteen years of living abroad, they returned to the United States and settled in Naples , where Waller worked as a writer, lectured, received membership in the Naples Press Club, and also participated in conferences of professional writers at the Renaissance Academy in and taught Russian at the University of Florida Gulf Coast . In 2000, he became one of the founders of Naples Review magazine. [one]
Waller worked as a public relations agent at Harshe-Rotman-Druck, and has held various positions at The Hertz Corporation . [2] At the same time, he worked on novels and children's books for the series “A Book to Begin ...”

Writing
His trilogy from the books Banker, Family, and American is on the New York Times bestseller list. [1] In addition, he co-authored scripts for the films “ Dog Midday ,” “ Close Encounters of the Third Degree, ” and “ In Visibility of All ". [1] Also in 1950, under the pseudonym Drake Waller, together with Arnold Drake created the first graphic novel “ It Rhymes with Lust ". [1] It was their joint idea to try to create a “picturesque novel”, which will become a bridge between comic books and book books. The graphic novel was published by St. John Publications . In 2007, it was reissued by Dark Horse Comics .
