Walter Naumburg inherited from his father both a family business and a love of music. Amateur cellist, he played in a student orchestra when he was a student at Harvard University , later he became one of the co-founders of the Society of Amateur Chamber Music Players and took part in his quartet. However, the full charity work of Naumburg unfolded after his retirement from business in 1923 .

According to Naumburg, the necessary assistance to young talented musicians should have been to organize and finance their public concerts - the success of which was in New York in the 1920s, which included many critics observing musical events in newspapers and magazines, and further career was guaranteed. In 1925 - 1926 Naumburg organized several such concerts, selecting their participants on a competitive basis (for example, in 1926, three violinists were selected from 37 musicians, who then performed in one of the prestigious New York concert halls). The success of this attempt prompted Naumburg in 1926 to establish a special fund for competitions, and since 1928 , under the auspices of a fund headed by Naumburg itself until his death, the Naumburg competition for young musicians began.
