Biography

German Genkel was born on April 5, 1865 in Bialystok, Grodno Province, in the family of a Prussian officer ( [3] . Elder brother of the future biologist Alexander Germanovich Genkel (1872-1927). Graduated from the 7th St. Petersburg Gymnasium (silver medal) and Oriental Department Saint-Petersburg University (1890; 1st degree diploma) in the department of Semitic languages .

After graduation, for 5 years he worked as a “private scholarly consultant in Jewish affairs” in the Department of Foreign Confessions of the Ministry of the Interior , from January 31, 1892 he was ranked as the Ministry of Education ; until 1900 he worked at the Imperial Public Library , where he was engaged in the description of Jewish books and manuscripts. At the same time, he taught at the School at the Reformed Churches and other educational institutions of St. Petersburg.

In 1900 he was sent to the Caucasus; taught in Tiflis and Batumi. In 1911-1913 he was the director of the 1st male Tiflis gymnasium [4] . Since 1914 - Director of the Perm Men's Gymnasium . In 1918 he worked in Irkutsk . In 1921-1924 he was a professor and vice-rector of the Institute for Extracurricular Education.

In 1924 he retired. It was published in the appendix to the journal “ Herald of knowledge ”.

Creativity

In his work he used pseudonyms: G. G .; G — l, G .; D. G. and G. G. - with D. G. Gunzburg [5] . Genkel's most important works are devoted to the history of Jewish literature :
