Biography

Georgios Hadzidakis was born in the village of Mirtio on the island of Crete, remaining at that time under Ottoman control. His father is Ioannis “John” Hadzidakis , a Greek mathematician, his brother Nikolaos is also a mathematician.

At the age of 14, “hare”, got out to Piraeus , the Greek kingdom . He studied classical philology at the University of Athens . In 1877, after winning a university competition in linguistics, he received a scholarship from the University of Athens to continue his studies abroad. He studied in Germany ( University of Leipzig , Jena and Berlin ) for 3 years with such linguists as Georg Kurtius , Karl Brugman , Eduard Sievers and Bertold Delbrück .

In 1880 he returned to Greece, where he initially worked at the Marazliev school of Athens. A year later, at the age of 33, he received a doctorate for a dissertation: “On the endings of the mustache, wasps” (“Περὶ τῶν εἰς -ους Συνηρημένων τῆς Β΄ Κλίσεως καὶ τῶν εἰς -ος Οὐδετέρων ὈνομάτωνΝέᾳῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςλῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςλῆςῆςλῆςῆςλῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςῆςλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλλ In the same year, he was appointed a teacher at the University of Athens , in 1885 he was promoted to the position of Associate Professor , in 1890 he was elected a permanent professor of linguistics and Indian philology and occupied the university department of the same name. In 1906, he was elected rector of the University of Athens. He left the department in 1923.

Hadzidakis was the person who put forward the idea of creating a “Center for the Compilation of the Historical Dictionary of the Modern Greek Language”, which eventually became a “Center for the Study of Modern Greek Dialects and Idioms” - Ι.Λ.Ν.Ε [4] .

Twice, with arms in his hands, he took part in Cretan uprisings - at a young age in the uprising of 1866, and 30 years later, as a professor at the Department of Linguistics and Indian Philology, in the uprising of 1897 .

Hadzidakis died in Athens on June 27, 1941 , during the Nazi occupation of Greece.

Scientific beliefs

Hadzidakis was an opponent of the theory that modern spoken Greek comes directly from the Doric and Aeolian dialects of the ancient Greek language [5] . He formed the view that modern Greek developed naturally from the ancient Attic dialect , the subsequent Alexandrian Koyne and the medieval Greek language of the Byzantine period [6] . In fact, he believed in preserving and, if possible, improving the official language of Kafarevus , pending the development of a spoken language [7] . As regards the so-called "Language issue", he followed the "middle" path of Adamantium Corais , opposing equally the supporters of archaism and ardent supporters of conversational Dimotika [2] .
