Until 1993, Mexico refused to recognize the South African government as legitimate because of the Mexican government stance against apartheid . In 1991, Nelson Mandela , President of the African National Congress, visited Mexico, thus paving the way for formal diplomatic relations, which will be founded on October 26, 1993. In 1994, both countries established diplomatic missions in each other's capitals, respectively [1] .

Mexico and South Africa work closely together in multilateral forums. Both countries also cooperate in scientific and educational cooperation in resolving social security issues. In 2010, Mexico and South Africa signed an “action plan” with respect to the priority development of such relations in various fields that make up bilateral relations [1] .

In 2014, total trade between the two countries amounted to 518 million US dollars [2] . Mexico in South Africa is the third largest trading partner from Latin America and South Africa in Mexico is the largest trading partner from Africa [3] .

  • The South African Embassy is located in Mexico City [5] .
