Story
In 1959, Yip Man settled in Hong Kong. His eldest son, Yip Chin, also returned to Hong Kong. Young Bruce Lee visits Yip Man and asks to become his teacher, saying that he will be his best student. After Lee demonstrates his speed, Ip does not accept or reject him, but says that he leaves the door open.
After Ip Chin enters battle with his classmate Chun Fung, their teacher, Miss Wong, asks her parents to come to school. As an apology, the Yip family invites Chun Fong to their home for dinner. At Ipa Chun's house, the fun demonstrates the rudimentary but impressive Wing Chun skills. When Yip asks the boy who his mentor is, he says that it is his father, Chun Tin-chi, a poor rickshaw who appears to pick up his son shortly afterwards. Despite the fact that he interacts cordially with Yip Man, he secretly envies Yip’s wealth and popularity and seeks to surpass him by successfully participating in underground battles in order to earn extra money.
The organizer, Ma Kin-san, the local leader of the triad , also works for Frank, an American real estate seller and professional boxer. Frank orders Ma to acquire a plot of land occupied by the school where Ip Chin and Chun Fong are engaged. Ma asks for a month for this to be done, but under threat guarantees that it will be done within two weeks. The next day, when Yip sets off to pick up his son from school, he sees that Ma and his people are forcing and beating the school principal, who refuses to sell them the school. Ip intervenes and restrains Ma, but is forced to let him go. Ip seeks help from Sergeant Tolstoy Poe, a close friend and police detective. Po agrees to help ipu, but claims a lack of manpower and influence. Ip then decides to guard the school with his students.
That night, they fend off the attacks of the Ma people who are trying to set fire to the school and kidnap the principal. Chun, who passed by, helps to recapture the invaders and rescues the director. Chun's skills impress Ipa, and he thanks him for his help. Ting Ngo-san, a local martial artist and former Ma mentor, is outraged by Ma’s dishonesty and, accompanied by Yip, confronts Ma at the Hong Kong shipyard, where he humiliates him in front of people. Ma answers with a hidden knife, but Ip stops him. By arrives and holds the situation in fear, but Yip ultimately allows Ma to leave again to cool the situation. Ma finds Chun and offers him a large sum of money to take revenge on Tina on his behalf. Desperate to open his own martial arts school, Chun accepts the offer and sends Tina to the hospital. Ip receives a call from the hospital and visits Tina.
Upon learning that Ting did not name him, Ip realizes that Ma lured him to school so that his gang could kidnap some of his students, including Ip Qing and Chun Fun. Ip arrives alone at the Ma shipyard, where Ma holds Ip Chin hostage and threatens to sell the children into slavery if the principal refuses to give the school away. Upon learning that his son was also abducted, Chun arrived and was allowed to leave with his son because he was an associate; but after his son tells him that they still have friends, he returns and fights with Ip. Ip and Chun can hold on until the police detachment led by Po arrests the gang and Ma escapes. After the incident, Frank fires Ma and sends the Thai boxer to Ip.
Upon returning home, Ip discovers that Wing-xing was diagnosed with cancer and she had six months left. Taking Vin-shin home from the pharmacy, Ipa is attacked in the elevator by a Thai boxer, whom he defeats. Poe later tells Ipu about Frank, who wants to destroy Ip at all costs in order to thwart his plans. Ip decides to confront Frank in his office, where he takes part in a three-minute fight, promising to leave Ip alone if he can hold out for three minutes. Ip was initially overwhelmed by the strength of the enemy, but begins to reverse the fight when he attacks Frank's lower half, and the battle ends in a draw. Ip leaves the office and Frank keeps his promise.
Chun, with the money he received from Ma earlier, opens his martial arts school and claims that his Wing Chun is genuine and Ipa is not. Chun continues to build his reputation by defeating several martial artists. Finally, he challenges Ipu to a battle that will decide who the real grandmaster of Wing Chun is. Meanwhile, Ip spends more time with his sick wife, feeling ashamed for having neglected her before. On the day of the battle, Ip chooses not to attend, but instead goes out to dance with Wing-sing, instructed by Bruce Lee, whom Ip finally accepts as a student. Due to Ipa’s failure, Chun was declared the winner, although he did not seem to be satisfied with Ipa’s refusal to fight him. Vin-xing, although pleased with Yip's decision to accompany her, makes an appointment with Chun on behalf of Yip, as she believes that Yip would have come if not for her condition.
Vin-shin escorts Ipa to battle. After the battle with poles, butterfly swords, and bare-handed fighting, Yip eventually defeats Chun with a single-inch punch. Accepting defeat, Chun destroys the school sign proclaimed by Grand Master Yip Man. Ip tells him that spending time with your loved ones is more important than competing and leaving. The epilogue reveals that Wing-xing died in 1960 and that Ip helped make Wing Chun internationally known and left a legacy.
