Sports career
He was left without a father, who died on the Soviet front during the Second World War, and began to do gymnastics with his brother Pasquale . Ascoli Pileno College teacher former athlete Pietro Baldassari early noticed the talents of adolescents and convinced them to start classes in the gym of the parish of St. Anthony of Padua in San Benedetto del Tronto.
The brothers began to compete at the national level in 1949 when they were noticed by Giulio Pennet, a former gymnast and coach at the national level. Athletes moved to Rome and began training in the sports center of Capannelle. From 1959 to 1971 belonged to the elite of world and European gymnastics. At the Summer Olympic Games in Rome (1960) he won a silver medal in the competition on bars, losing only to the legendary Soviet athlete Boris Shakhlin and together with his brother became a bronze medalist in team competition.
He was a multiple European champion: in a vault (1961), on the uneven bars (1971 and 1963), a bronze medalist - in exercises on the uneven bars (1967), in all-around and in parallel exercises (1961). He was a four-time absolute champion of Italy in gymnastics (1961, 1967, 1968 and 1970). In the IV Mediterranean Games in Naples (1963) he became a two-time champion - on the uneven bars and in the team competition, won silver in the absolute championship and in the exercises on the rings and bronze - in the floor exercises. At the V Mediterranean Games in Tunisia, he won a gold medal in the team championship and became a bronze medalist on the uneven bars.
At the Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo (1964), he became fourth in the team competition and 26th in the absolute championship, four years later, at the Summer Games in Mexico City (1968), he became the 12th in the team competition.
At the end of his sports career, he founded the Rome-70 Sports Fund, the aim of which was to find and support talented youth.
In 1981, he was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit for the Italian Republic.
