Hainburg is the easternmost Austrian city on the Danube . It is located 40 kilometers east of the capital of Vienna , a few kilometers from the border with Slovakia .

History

Hainburg is first mentioned in the Song of the Nibelungs (Advent XXII, stanza 1376); He received the rights of the city in 1244.

Throughout the Middle Ages, the city ​​played the role of the eastern outpost of the Habsburg empire and was often subjected to raids by Hungarians and Turks.

Attractions

  • The fortress wall is a well-preserved wall with three gates and 15 towers. All three gates were built in the 13th century. The total length of the wall is 2.5 km.
    • Vienna Gate - the western gate of the city, one of the highest castle gates in Austria - more than 20 meters. Now they have a city museum.
    • The Hungarian Gate is the city’s massive eastern gate, the oldest of the three.
    • Fishing gate - lead towards the Danube. Through them in 1683 the Turks entered the city, having carried out a bloody massacre. The lane leading to them is called Bloody Lane.
  • The ruins of Heimoburg Castle are located on Mount Schlossberg in the city. The castle was ravaged during the same Turkish invasion of 1683.
