General information
Included in Brook-on-Light County. The population of 5651 people. It covers an area of 25.05 km². The official code is 3 07 10 .
Hainburg is the easternmost Austrian city on the Danube . It is located 40 kilometers east of the capital of Vienna , a few kilometers from the border with Slovakia .
History
Hainburg is first mentioned in the Song of the Nibelungs (Advent XXII, stanza 1376); He received the rights of the city in 1244.
Throughout the Middle Ages, the city played the role of the eastern outpost of the Habsburg empire and was often subjected to raids by Hungarians and Turks.
Attractions
- The fortress wall is a well-preserved wall with three gates and 15 towers. All three gates were built in the 13th century. The total length of the wall is 2.5 km.
- Vienna Gate - the western gate of the city, one of the highest castle gates in Austria - more than 20 meters. Now they have a city museum.
- The Hungarian Gate is the city’s massive eastern gate, the oldest of the three.
- Fishing gate - lead towards the Danube. Through them in 1683 the Turks entered the city, having carried out a bloody massacre. The lane leading to them is called Bloody Lane.
- The ruins of Heimoburg Castle are located on Mount Schlossberg in the city. The castle was ravaged during the same Turkish invasion of 1683.
