Biography Facts

In June 2003, Jennifer graduated from Paxon High School in Jacksonville, Florida.

In 2003-2006, Fichter studied at the University of Florida , where she graduated with a bachelor of arts degree in English.

In August 2007, Fichter began working as a teacher at Robinswood High School in Orlando . She taught English literature. However, in November 2008, the school’s administration accused Fichter of violating the school’s ethical rules and “inappropriate relations” with an eighth-grader and suspended him from teaching, and in December Jennifer quit.

In August 2011, she began working at High School in Lakeland, Florida. [4] As the local media later found out, Jennifer lied several times when she got to work, in particular, hiding the fact that an investigation was conducted against her [5] .

Investigation and trial

Jennifer Fichter was arrested on April 14, 2014 [6] on charges of 37 episodes of sexual relations with minors in 2011-2014 [7] [1] . For each such episode, Jennifer threatened up to 15 years in prison, but in April 2015 she refused a deal with the investigation, offering 25 years in prison for all episodes.

Florida is one of 12 US states where sexual consent is 18 years old [8] . In the remaining 38 states, age ranges from 16 to 17 years.

During the trial, Jennifer repented of her deed and confirmed the information about her pregnancy from the student and forced abortion .

On July 2, 2015, Judge Glenn Shelby announced the verdict, sending Jennifer Fichter to prison for 22 years and calling her “a predator”, repeating the definition of Sergeant Gary Gross (Lakeland Police) [9] .

Also on July 21, 2015 [10] [11] a second trial began regarding charges of similar crimes committed in Hillsborough County ( Florida ).

In November 2016, Fichter asked the court to commute the sentence. Her new lawyer, Robert Norgard, summoned only one witness, Dr. Richard Marshall, a neuro- and forensic psychologist , who stated that usually men have sexual relations with minors with predatory motives, and women are less likely to have sexual predation and opportunistic behavior and may have motives of an emotional nature, not sexual. The prosecutor reiterated that Fichter was a predator. As a result, Judge Glenn Shelby rejected the request [12] [13] .

On April 25, 2017, a decision was made on a case in Hillsborough County. Fichter was sentenced to 3 years in prison, which will be counted in parallel with the first sentence. [14]

Public Reaction

The Change.org resource published a petition in its defense (in Russian) [15] [16] , which collected about 25 thousand signatures per day, and by July 9 more than 50 thousand [17] .

The verdict handed down by Judge Glenn Shelby provoked a wide and mixed reaction; in particular, local media noted massive outrage with such a long punishment by Europeans. Some noted that such a reaction only shows double standards: if a male teacher had relations with three minor students, the public could demand more severe punishment [18] .
