Harvard Dictionary of Music - English musical terminology dictionary. Published by reputable publisher Harvard University Press .
The author of the first edition of the dictionary (1944) is the prominent German-American musicologist Willy Apel . The second edition (edited and supplemented, 1969), although it also appeared under the name Apel, in reality contained articles by many other (mainly American) authors. It was reprinted several times (8th reprint 1974). The third edition, entitled The New Harvard Music Dictionary (1986), edited by D.M. Randel was expanded to include European and American music of the 20th century, and also included new articles on non-European music, jazz, and partly on popular music. In its fourth edition (also edited by Randall, 2003), the book returned the original title, Harvard Music Dictionary. This publication was attended by 116 (mostly American) authors named by name; in addition, many articles (including those clearly owned by Apel) are not signed. Among the famous authors are Rebecca Balzer, Dmitry Konomos, Janet Knapp, Andre Barbera, Jeremy Yudkin, Bruno Netl, Harold Powers , Jesse Ooons, James Haar, Laurel Fey (article "Russia"), Peter Jeffrey, Richard Sherr, Michael Randall.
Along with the Harvard Dictionary of Music, the publisher published the Harvard Biographical Dictionary of Music . The first edition edited by Randall came out in 1996 and contained about 5500 articles.
