Forest Railways
The need to build local forest roads was dictated by the acute shortage of building materials and fuel for the city under construction. The first line (along the valley of the Magadanka River) was built already in 1932, its total length was about 16 kilometers, the track gauge was 750 mm. During the 1930s, a branch was added to the main line along the Kamenushka River Valley, with a length of about 9 km.
Magadan Railway - Tent
On January 1, 1940, an order was signed to build the Magadan-Palatka narrow-gauge railway, and construction began in the spring of that year. The first section was commissioned in 1941, and by 1950 the construction was completely completed. The total length of the road was a little over 90 km, the track width was 750 mm. The starting point was to be the port of Magadan, however, a branch to it was never built, due to the complexity of the terrain; in fact, the road began in the area of the Magadan Mechanical Plant . As the initial suburban section of the new road, a narrow-gauge forest railway was used along the Kamenushka River (approximately to the Invalidny settlement), then the road turned east, to the Kolyma Highway, and went along it to the 51st km post. After that, the railway route ran along the Uptar River valley to the village of Splavnaya, then, along the Khasyn River valley, it continued to the Palatka village, ending in the Novaya Palatka microdistrict, where there was a turning circle for steam locomotives. The railway was used to supply the northern regions from Kolymsnab warehouses in the port of Magadan , in the opposite direction transported construction timber and firewood from logging in the Khasyn valley, as well as coal from the Khasynsk deposit .
The rolling stock of the Magadan-Palatka railway consisted of 21 steam locomotives and 320 wagons. Seven railway stations were located along the road: Magadan , Uttar , Cape Pogranichny (Slavnaya), Lesnaya, Beauty , Khasyn , Tent and four routes: the 12th km, Dukcha , Vodyanaya, Khablya. The management of the road was located in Uttar by the 50th year.
In 1956, the narrow gauge railway was declared unprofitable and the movement of trains on it stopped. Finally, the road was dismantled by the end of the 50s.

Ust-Tuscan-Elgen-Ugolny Railway
The Tuscan railway was commissioned in 1939, and was intended for the development of the Elgen brown coal deposit, supplying coal to the village of Ust-Taskan, and through it other villages of Central Kolyma. It connected Ust-Tuscan with the center of coal mining - the village of Elgen-Ugolny, passing, for the most part, along the valley of the Lyglytakh River.
The length of the road was about 70 kilometers. In addition to the end stations, there was the Zeleny Cape station, as well as 5 roundabouts: Zaozernaya, Izvestkovy, Podgornaya, Losinaya and the 62nd kilometer. The locomotive fleet consisted of eighteen steam locomotives of the series: 157, 159, GR-4 and VP. The wagon fleet totaled 188 wagons and platforms.
In the future, the narrow gauge railway was supposed to reach the Lower Seymchan, however, the second turn of the road was never built. In the future, it was planned to connect the Taskanskaya and Zyryanskaya railways between themselves, as well as to bring the Magadan - Palatka railway to Ust-Taskan, however, these plans were not destined to be realized.
The operation of the road was completed in 1956.
Cold Mine Railroad
The road was designed to transport ore from the mine to a gold recovery plant. It was located in the valley of the Utina River (a tributary of the Kolyma River) , along the Kholodny stream, its length was 2 kilometers. This is probably the only one of the narrow gauge Dalstroy, which was electrified. The beginning of operation is the middle of the 40s of the last century, the end is the middle of the 50s.
The famous Kolyma local historian I. A. Panikarov wrote in his article:
- The raw material for the factory was the ore of the Utinsky gold ore deposit. It was delivered to the factory from the Kholodny mine by narrow gauge railway around the clock on 10-15 trolleys with a capacity of one and a half tons. Traction power was provided by electric locomotives and motor vehicles.
Unrealized railway projects on Dalstroy (1938-51) [1]
- Ust-Tuscan - Seymchan - Zyryanka - Coal. Track - 750 mm, length - 600 km. Two sections were implemented: Ust-Tuscan - Elgen-Ugolny and Zyryanka - Ugolny
- Ust-Tuscan - Oymyakon. Track - 750 mm, length - 500 km.
- Coal - Honuu (Moma). Track - 750 mm, length - 420 km.
- Oymyakon - Honuu (Moma). Track - 750 mm, length - 430 km.
- Oymyakon - Cross Haljay . Wide track, length - 550 km. The project noted that this road, the first few years, would be “island” (autonomous), until the approach to the Krest-Khaldzhay broad-gauge railway from the BAM .
- Magadan railway junction (except for constructed roads)
- Line Vesyolaya - Dukcha with stations (21.3 km)
- Coal pier - TPP line with stations (9.2 km)
- The branch from the Magadan-Palatka road to the Melkavodninsky coal deposit
- Passenger station "Magadan" (two-story building)
- Passenger station “Port Nagaevo” (two-story building)
On the planned Palatka-Ust-Tuscan road, which was supposed to connect the Magadan junction with the Upper Kolyma roads, the design documentation was never developed. Narrow-gauge railways (with the exception of mine) were supposed to be changed to a broad gauge in the future, including them in the country's unified railway network

Interesting information from documents and memories
- In the prewar years, the forest road was also used to transport vacationers to nature. On weekends, one of the locomotives with the composition of the platforms was provided to city organizations for transportation of excursions and ordinary Magadans who wanted to relax in the picturesque surroundings of Magadan.

- From the memoirs of B. Kazakov, who studied the history of the glass factory. Here is what this researcher writes:
- “Delay on the way always annoys the driver and passenger. However, both of them perceived, one might say, with warmth. This is when the barrier was lowered while passing the train of the Magadan-Palatka railway. She also lay and, consider, under the windows near the house of engineers. A rare man in the street didn’t come to the window to admire the train suitable for Belle station. And at the 47th km, cars slowed down to enjoy the shunting locomotives - there was a depot. But how could it be otherwise which of those who arrived at the time in Kolyma, passing the Siberian distances, didn’t get to the shores of the Pacific Ocean by train? From this railway, although it seemed like a toy, the mainland, which was so far, was blowing at all! ”
- Quoted from the book by P. Zasukhin. Bridge between times
- In memory of the railway past in Magadan there were 1st, 2nd and 3rd Railway lanes, Railway Street, as well as a stop called Vodokachka. In the village of Stekolny there is also Zheleznodorozhnaya Street
- According to I. I. Lukin, one of the first builders of the Northeast, an honorary citizen of Magadan, the Magadan-Palatka railway was artificially brought to a state of unprofitability, this is what he writes in his book:
- “The management of the road was subordinate to the head of Kolymsnab, but since April 1953 the road was transferred to the subordination of the department of motor transport. The leaders of this unit, as time has shown, were not interested in the development of the narrow gauge railway and practically did not help the team of road workers in anything, taking an unspoken course towards eliminating the narrow gauge railway. This was facilitated by the frequent turnover of road management. ... As a result, since 1952, the road provided only one-way freight traffic: Magadan - Tent ... Now it was already possible to talk about the unprofitability of the highway, which the heads of the motor transport department S. S. Tolkachev and then A. M. Rykhlitsky did not fail to take advantage. They repeatedly raised the question to the head of Dalstroy about the elimination of the road. For them, the road was alien, it required attention, prompt resolution of many issues related to its work. Only the reluctance to engage in railways led to the elimination of competitive transport. ”

- Several steam locomotives were built directly in Magadan, V. A. Logvinov, a former chief engineer of the Magadan Mechanical Plant , writes about this in his memoirs:
- “Before the war, several Kukushka-type locomotives were brought to Kolyma. We repaired them for the time being, and then there was already nothing to repair, so wears out. We looked at these locomotives, thought, figured out: a difficult thing, but you can build. And from the frame to the spools, from the connecting rods to the grate, we built such a locomotive ... "
