Biography

Born on September 15 ( September 28 according to the new style) in 1907 ; father - scientist-chemist Alexander Evgenievich Porai-Koshits , mother - Porai-Koshchits, Tatyana Ivanovna (nee Umnova).

He died on March 18, 1999 in St. Petersburg. He was buried at Komarovsky cemetery . [2] [3]

The archives of the St. Petersburg branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences contain documents related to E. A. Porai-Kosits. [four]

Family

  • Wife - Matyukh, Vera Fedorovna , Soviet graphic artist.
    • Son - Porai-Koshits, Alexey Evgenievich - Russian theater artist.

Scientific Achievements

From 1934 to 1942, E. A. Porai-Koshits worked on his Ph.D. thesis on the topic “Glassy state (X-ray examination)”, first in Leningrad, including six months (September 1941 - February 1942) during the blockade of Leningrad, and then in Kazan, where the Technological Institute and the Academy of Sciences were evacuated, and defended it in 1943 [5] .

EA Porai-Koshits defended his doctoral dissertation on the theme “Study of the structure of glassy substances by X-ray methods” in 1953 [5] .

In the late 1950s and early 1960s, E. A. Porai-Kosits studied the chemically inhomogeneous structure of sodium borosilicate glasses. In 1963, for his studies on the decisive role of the chemically inhomogeneous glass structure in the process of glass formation, E.A. Porai-Kosits, together with his co-authors, was presented with the title of Lenin Prize laureate. The official wording was as follows [5] :

Physicists: Avrorin Evgeny Nikolaevich, Pavlenko Vladimir Antonovich, chemists: Gorynin Igor Vasilievich, Kitaygorodsky Isaac Ilyich, Porai-Koshits Evgeny Alexandrovich, designer of rocket technology Grushin Peter Dmitrievich, optician Elkin Alexander Efimovich - for developing an astronavigation complex for submarines.

In subsequent years, the research laboratory, led by E. A. Porai-Koshits, studied the phenomenon of segregation in glasses and became a leader in this field in the Soviet Union and one of the recognized authorities in the world [5] . EA Porai-Koshits was the co-author of the first book on the metastable phase separation, “The phenomena of segregation in glasses” [6] , as well as the editor and co-author of the only book on this problem published in English [7] .

EA Porai-Koshits is one of the initiators of the creation of the journal “Physics and Chemistry of Glass” [5] [8] . In 1991 he was awarded the I.V. Grebenshchikov Prize for a series of works entitled “The Inhomogeneous Structure of Inorganic Glassy Substances”.

EA Porai-Koshits was awarded the title of laureate of the International Mott Prize ( en: Mott Prize ), was an honorary member of the American Ceramic Society [5] .

Rewards

  • Lenin Prize (1963)
  • Prize named after I. V. Grebenshchikov (1991) - for a series of works “Inhomogeneous structure of inorganic glassy substances”
