Biography
Nikolay Gamaleya was born on April 27, 1795, from noblemen ; the son of the head physician Mikhail Leontyevich Gamaley and his wife Nadezhda Fedorovna; elder brother of the Mogilev governor Mikhail Gamaley [1] [2] .
At the end of the course of sciences at Moscow University in 1810, Gamaleya joined the department of destinies on March 4 of the same year. While serving here, on April 8 he received the rank of college registrar, and on November 17 of the same year he was appointed to the office of the committee, the highest institution for Livonia affairs. Having received the ranks of the provincial and college secretaries on October 21, 1811 and April 12, 1812, Gamaleya left the civil service and, upon a call from the military authorities, entered the St. Petersburg militia , created to defend Russia from the Napoleonic troops in the Patriotic War of 1812 , with renaming as second lieutenants [3 ] .
As part of the St. Petersburg militia, Gamalei, after the expulsion of Napoleon from Russia, took part in the foreign campaign of the Russian army . He fought in Poland , Prussia , Saxony , Austria , Bavaria , WΓΌrttemberg , Baden , Switzerland and France . He took a direct part in the Second Battle of Polotsk , where for the difference in which he was awarded the Order of St. Anne of the 4th degree.
