Biography

Her father, thymol, was a metallurgist and died when she was still young. Her mother, Louise, was a seamstress and embroiderer. Erta was the ninth of ten children in the family. When she was 10 years old, she left with one of her brothers to study at the Francois Duvalier Lyceum, where she met her future husband, Ernst Truillot, who was 21 years older than her. In 1971 she received a doctorate in law, becoming the first female lawyer in the country. From 1975 to 1988, she held various positions in the Haitian federal courts until she became the first female judge of the Supreme Court.

Pascal-Truillot served as chairman of the Supreme Court when, as a result of the uprising against the government of Prosper Avril, she was appointed to the post of head of state. Power in the country was voluntarily transferred to her by General Erar Abraham , who served as president for three days. As interim president, her task was to coordinate the transition to democratic government in the country. She watched the first truly free elections on December 16, 1990. Jean-Bertrand Aristide won the election with 67% of the vote.

On January 6, 1991, a coup d'etat led by Roger Lafontant , the leader of the Taunton Macuts under the rule of Jean-Claude Duvalier. He captured Erta Pascal-Truillo and proclaimed himself president. After a large number of supporters of Aristide took to the streets, Lafontan tried to declare martial law in the country, but the army did not support him.

Aristide accused Pascal-Truillot of complicity in the January coup. She was fired the day after the intervention of the United States. US authorities also demanded that the ban on her departure from the country be lifted. Erta soon left the country, but a year later returned to her homeland. He is currently working on a Haitian Biographical Encyclopedia.
