History

The Islamic State announced plans to create its own currency on November 13, 2014 [1] . The planned design of coins made of gold, silver and copper was published [2] . On June 24, 2015, the previously announced coins in dinars were announced [3] [4] . It was planned to launch the currency in circulation in the near future. The planned exchange rate for this dinar was approximately $ 139 [1] [3] [4] [5] . Experts considered two goals of the appearance of such a currency: propaganda and the desire to give IS another attribute of statehood [6] . According to statements by key figures of the Islamic State, this will allow the state not to depend on the “financial system imposed on Muslims from the west” [3] . The issue of the coin was dedicated to the documentary “ The Rise of the Caliphate and the Return of the Golden Dinar ” [7] .

At the end of 2015, the Turkish police stopped the activity of an underground mint in Gaziantep , minting coins in IG dinars [8] .

In the controlled territories in Syria , IG officials prohibited the circulation of the Syrian currency , instead introduced the circulation of dirhams and fuluses. According to local residents, if pounds were found from someone, they were seized or destroyed, and in return they were given several fils or dirhams [9] .

Coins and Banknotes

In 2015, the IG Treasury announced the minting of gold (1 and 5 dinars) , silver and copper coins [3] , their images (both projects [3] and finished coins [10] ) immediately appeared on the network.

Banknotes

As of June 2016, no statements were made on the printing of banknotes in gold dinars by IG officials. Some experts acknowledge the issue of paper money in this situation as inappropriate [11] ; moreover, the issuance of banknotes diverges from the concept of the golden dinar [6] .
