Development

On November 16, 2013, it was announced that AMC was developing the idea of a television series based on Vertigo's Preacher comic book series, an imprint of DC Comics [43] . On November 18, 2013, BleedingCool confirmed that Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg were hired to adapt the original comic strip and, with the assistance of Sam Kathleen , to write the script for the pilot episode of the television series, which is supposed to be distributed under the Sony Pictures Television logo [44] . On February 6, 2014, the channel officially approved the script for the pilot episode by Rogen and Goldberg and appointed Sam Kathleen as a showrunner [45] . On December 3, 2014, filming of a pilot episode was ordered [46] . The original comic book authors Steve Dillon and Garth Ennis also act as co-executive producers of the show [47] [48] .

On September 9, 2015, the first season of ten episodes was ordered [49] , which premiered on May 22, 2016 [3] . On June 29, 2016, AMC extended the series for the second season, consisting of 13 episodes, which premiered on June 25, 2017 [4] [50] . On October 26, 2017, it was announced that the series was extended for the third season [51] , which premiered on June 24, 2018, and it consists of 10 episodes [16] [52] . In November 2018, the series was extended for season 4, which will be final.

Casting

On February 12, 2015, Superhero Hype announced that the character Tulip O'Hara would be played by an African-American actress [53] . On March 12, 2015, The Tracking Board published information that the AMC channel is considering actor Dominic Cooper for the role of Jesse Custer [54] . In March 2015, the role of the former Custer, Tulip O'Hara, was approved by actress Ruth Negga , and Joseph Gilgan joined the main cast as a vampire Cassidy [8] . On April 9, 2015, it was officially announced that Lucy Griffiths would play the role of Emily Woodrow, Jesse's assistant [9] . On the same day, unconfirmed information was received at that time that Dominic Cooper signed a contract for the role of Jesse Custer [55] , but this was officially announced only on April 17, 2015 [7] .

Filming

On May 14, 2015, Seth Rogen tweeted that the filming of the pilot episode had officially started and that he and Evan Goldberg were directing it [45] .

Previous Adaptation Attempts

The first attempt to adapt the “Preacher” for the television screen was a film, the production of which was started by Electric Entertainment. The director's place was taken by Rachel Talalay , and the writer was Garth Ennis, who was supposed to adapt the plot of the comic for the script. Rupert Harvey and Tom Astor were appointed producers. By May 1998, Gart Ennis had prepared three versions of the script, each of which was mainly based on the story arc “Runaway to Texas” ( English Gone to Texas ) [56] . Due to budgetary problems and the religious ambiguity of the original comic book, film production was frozen.

Later, the rights to the adaptation of “The Preacher” from Electric Entertainment were bought by the Miramax Films studio , which resumed production of the film, but also soon abandoned the adaptation due to budget problems.

In November 2006, shortly after Miramax Films left the project, HBO announced the production of a pilot episode of the television series based on the Preacher comic book series. The script began to be written by Mark Stephen Johnson , and Howard Deutsch was supposed to take the director’s chair [57] . The leadership of HBO was impressed by Johnson's experimental script and commissioned him to create a canon for the first season. According to Johnson’s original idea, “each comic book episode turns into one full episode” on a frame-by-frame basis. Johnson said: “I gave [HBO] comics and said,“ One issue, one hour. ” In response, Garth Ennis told me: “You overestimate the comic book.” And I objected: “No, no, no. This is to make the story look like a comic book "". By August 2008, HBO management refused to produce a television series, as it considered the atmosphere of the story to be too dark and religiously ambiguous [58] .

In October 2008, the rights to film adaptation in the form of a film were bought by Columbia Pictures and appointed Sam Mendes as a director. Neil Moritz and Jason Netter were to act as producers. According to the studio, the source scripts of Ennis should not have been used. However, shortly after they announced the creation of this film, the project was again postponed indefinitely.
