It is part of Melk County. The population is 5812 people (as of December 31, 2005). It covers an area of 23.82 km². It is located on the right bank of the Danube at the confluence of the Ibs River, 15 kilometers west of Melk and 30 kilometers from Sankt Pölten . The railway Vienna - Salzburg passes through Ibs an der Donau. Travel time by train from Vienna is 1.5 hours.

The city was founded in 1317 . Ibs an der Donau stands on the border of two Danube regions - the Nibelungengau, a wide and flat valley between Ibs and Melk and Strudengau, the once rugged and rapids stretch of the Danube, sandwiched between the rocks and located above Ibs. In the middle of the 20th century, the most dangerous rapids were blown up, and just above Ibs the Ibs - Perzenboig Dam was built. The resulting reservoir flooded the remaining rapids and made this section of the Danube navigable.
