Biography
He graduated from the Moscow Geological Prospecting Institute (1962). He worked at the Moscow Geological Exploration Institute, the Institute of Permafrost and the Institute of Geology and Geophysics, Siberian Branch of the USSR Academy of Sciences. He was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR (December 23, 1987). Elected academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences (May 26, 2000). Heads the Department of Earth Cryology at the Tyumen State Oil and Gas University [2]
1985 - 1991 Director of the Institute for the Development of the North
2006 - 2010 Member of the Public Chamber of the Russian Federation
1991 - 2014 Director of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science, Institute of the Earth Cryosphere, Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences
1991 - 2017 Chairman of the Federal State Budgetary Institution of Science Tyumen Scientific Center of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences and head of the scientific direction of the Institute of the Earth Cryosphere, Tyumen Scientific Center SB RAS
The main area of scientific activity of V. P. Melnikov is cryology and research on the new cryology paradigm: cryosophy [3] (a system of ideas about the cold world), cryogenic diversity and cryogenic resources (cryogenic phenomena, processes and formations, as the most important factor in the evolution of living and bone matter ) and cryotrassology [4] (a section of cryology studying the history of the Earth following traces left by the cold); study of natural and natural-anthropogenic systems, the backbone factors of which are cryogenic conditions, processes and formations [5] . Of particular relevance are the work on the dynamics of the Arctic and subarctic territories as a result of the interaction of geospheres and a wide range of technogenic impacts.
The resource approach in the cryology of the Earth, developed by V.P. Melnikov, and the work on gas hydrates initiated by him substantially expanded modern ideas about the object of study and received international recognition. A special page in interdisciplinary research has become cryogenic event loggers during archaeological excavations of the ancient mounds of Altai and Mongolia.
Under the leadership of V.P. Melnikov, studies are being conducted of the effect of bacteria from ancient frozen rocks on modern biosystems. Studies have shown the positive role of cold and paleomicrobiota in strengthening the immune system and life expectancy [6] .
V.P. Melnikov formulated the basic principles of an interdisciplinary system of ideas about the cold world of cryosophy [7] [8] : the principle of cryogenic diversity and cryogenic resources (phenomena, processes and formations, as the most important factor in the evolution of living and bone matter), the principle of relevance of the Earth’s cosphere.
Author and co-author of more than 300 scientific papers, including 13 monographs and 21 inventions.
