Michelson Crater ( lat. Michelson ) - a large ancient impact crater in the equatorial region of the far side of the moon . The name was given in honor of the American physicist Albert Abraham Michelson (1852-1931) and approved by the International Astronomical Union in 1970. The formation of the crater belongs to the nectar period [1] .

Crater Description
The closest neighbors of Michelson Crater are Grigg Crater in the northwest; Colcherster Crater in the northeast and Herzspring Crater in the southwest. In the southeast of the crater is a chain of Michelson craters [2] . Selenographic coordinates of the center of the crater are , diameter 123.1 km [3] , depth 2.9 km [1] .
Michelson Crater has a polygonal shape, is significantly destroyed over a long time of its existence and is covered by rocks ejected during the formation of the East Sea . The shaft is flattened; along the entire perimeter, except for a small area of the northern part, it is marked by craters of various sizes. The shaft height above the surrounding area reaches 1610 m [1] , the volume of the crater is approximately 16000 km³ [1] . The bottom of the bowl is relatively flat, dotted with many craters of various sizes.
The area around the crater is covered with numerous chains of craters from secondary impacts during the formation of the Sea of Rains .
