Prologue
On September 11, 2015, the prologue for the ninth season was released on the official website of the series, in which the Doctor returned to the planet Karn . Someone is looking for him throughout time and space, and the Doctor himself leaves his old friend from the Sisters of Ohile a mysterious subject for preservation. She also warns him that what he has in mind will not end with anything good for him. The doctor replies that he will not immediately go to a meeting with his old enemy, punishing him to look after the Universe when he is gone, and is about to leave. Ohila says to the Doctor, after all, that no matter how hard he tries to hide, his friends will always find him [6] .
Meditation Doctor
An exclusive prequel, an anticipating episode, entitled “The Doctor's Meditation” [7] [8] , was presented on September 15 and 16, 2015, together with the rental of the final episodes of the eighth season, “ Dark Water ” and “ Death in Heaven ” in cinemas of the USA , Canada , Denmark , and also Russia and the CIS countries in 3D [9] [10] [11] . September 18 episode became available on the official page of the series on Facebook and other online platforms [12] . The doctor is in medieval England with his loyal friend Bors. The Time Lord is overwhelmed by anxiety about the future, from which he unsuccessfully tries to distract himself. In the end, after Bors' persistent questions about who he should meet and why he should meditate for this, the Doctor tells a friend about his plans.
Story
In an indefinite time, a war with a mixture of primitive and advanced technologies takes place on an alien battlefield. A little boy runs through the war zone and is trapped in a “hand mine” field. Then the Doctor appears and throws him his sonic screwdriver so that he can escape. The doctor asks the boy his name and is horrified when it turns out that before him Davros , the future creator of the Daleks .
Centuries later, the servant of Davros, a creature named Sarff colony, is searching for the Doctor throughout the galaxy. He has a message for the time lord that Davros is dying, and also that he “remembers and knows” about something. Having never found the Doctor anywhere, Sarff informs his master of this, to which he advises him to look for the Doctor's friends, who will lead him to the master of the time.
Nowadays, on Earth, UNIT seeks help from Clara Oswald because they cannot contact the Doctor. According to Kate Stewart, every plane that was in the air froze in place, and no one knows why. Trying to find the cause of this incident, UNIT receives a message through a special channel intended for the Doctor, but this turns out to be Missy , who demands to arrange a meeting with Clara. Missy confirms that it was she who froze the planes, since she also needs Clara’s help in finding the Doctor. Missy shows Clara the Doctor's confessional disk - the last will and testament, according to tradition, delivered the day before the ruler of the time , who was sent to her. Missy explains that the Doctor believes that he has only one day left to live, and this worries her.
Clara and Missy find the Doctor in 1138 in Essex , where he threw a three-week party. There, they are finally tracked down by the colony of Sarff, which, as it turns out, is in fact not one creature, but a colony of several snakes under the monastic robe, which gave it a resemblance to a human figure. He sends the time lord Davros and his screwdriver. It is a shame to the doctor - it turns out that he did not save Davros as a child, but threw him away - and then he agrees to surrender to Sarff. Despite the Doctor's objections, Clara and Missy insist on going along with him as captives. After this, the Doctor's friend from the Middle Ages, Bors, who turned out to be a puppet of the distant, discovers the TARDIS and is going to deliver it to its owners.
Sarff brings prisoners to a certain space station. Doctors refer to Davros, who tells the time lord that he remembers how he acted with him. In the meantime, Missy notices that gravity in this place is not at all typical of a space station. She opens the gateway that leads to the outside, and together with Clara she finds herself in an open space, later discovering that they actually stand on the planet. The planet becomes visible, and to the dismay of Missy and the Doctor, it turns out that this is Skaro , the homeland of the Daleks.
The Daleks seize Missy and Clara and take them to the TARDIS, which they are going to destroy, and Davros forces the Doctor to look at it. Missy suggests that the Dardis use the TARDIS, not destroy, but instead disintegrate it. The time-lord begs Davros to save Clara, to which he replies that he cannot control his creations. Clara tries to escape, and then distant and disintegrate her. With the help of a laser, they destroy the TARDIS, leaving the Doctor powerless and all alone. Davros ridicules the Doctor's compassion as his “greatest weakness,” and wants him to finally admit that “compassion is a mistake.”
The doctor is again on the battlefield with little Davros, who asks if he will save him. Declaring that he had come from the future, the sovereign of time threatens with a gun of the distant and says that there is only one way in which he is going to save his friend.
Relationship with other series
In the episode, you can see a lot of different models of Daleks from previous eras. Their creator, Davros, and Skaro's home planet reappears. Also present are excerpts from Davros's conversations with the Doctor’s previous incarnations, ranging from the series “ The Origin of Daleks ” to “The Stolen Land ” [13] .
In search of the Doctor, the Sarff colony visits the Maldovarium bar, the last time appearing in the Good Man Going to War series. The bar has sycoraxes , huts , uds and tivolians. The Proclamation of the Shadows returns - the intergalactic police, led by the Architect, and the Djuduns , which were last seen in the series “The Stolen Land”. The Sisters of Karna also returned from the mini-episode "The Night of the Doctor ", the first appearance of which took place in the series " The Brain of Morbius " [13] .
External references

The melody that the Doctor plays the guitar while driving to the arena on the tank is an improvisation by Peter Capaldi on the title theme of the series [15] . Later, when the Doctor notices Clara, he begins to play the introduction to Roy Orbison's song “ Oh, Pretty Woman ”, and after that to the song of Tony Basil “Mickey” [16] .

Rare for the BBC, praise came from the Daily Mail : ““ Doctor Who ”is incredibly good - a witty, strong, exciting, TV piece about the past and the future: the BBC in its best form” [34] . Ben Travis from the Evening Standard newspaper commented on the exciting start of the season: “Here's how to appear: riding a tank, wearing a Ray-Ban with an electric guitar at the ready. To the constantly expanding list of abilities of the last timelord, one can definitely add one more thing: “Doctor Who“ can anneal ” [35] .
The Radio Times ’s Patrick Malkern rated the series as 5 stars out of 5, praised the story and noticed that the idea to show Davros as a child turned out to be remarkable [26] . SFX magazine's Nick Setfield also awarded the episode with five stars, stating that he was "full of wit and threat" and "not afraid to go against the classical foundations of this series" [29] . The Daily Telegraph was more convinced by the lead actor than by the plot: “Rarely when the show relies so much on the game of one actor - and Capaldi doesn’t fail: he is able to bring enough emotional depth to make a show of tomfoolery into a drama” [36] .
