The city center is located on the top of a hill, at an altitude of 502 m. The name "Alatri" comes from the Romance name Aletrium (Aletrium), whose roots go to Asia Minor to the pelasgas .

The patron saint of the city is venerated by holy Sixtus I , Pope of Rome , the celebration on the first Thursday after Easter and January 11th .

Since 2006, Constantino Magliokka has been elected burgomaster.

History

The exact date of the founding of the city is unknown. It is believed that it originated long before the formation of the Roman Empire . The city has a preserved fortress wall of impressive size, the Acropolis, which can be reached through the Great Gate (Porta Maggiore) with a huge monolithic architrave and the Small Gate (Porta Minore) with 3 phallic images that symbolize fertility and are at the same time protective symbols.

Of the attractions there is also the Residence of the Bishop and the Cathedral of St. Paul. The cathedral is a Eucharistic miracle of 1228 - embodied wafer , noted in the Vatican archives .

The patron saint of the city is revered by St. Sixtus I , Pope of Rome, resting in the city cathedral, celebrating January 11 and the first Thursday after Easter.

Coat of arms

From the beginning of the XII century, the Alatri coat of arms depicts a tower with two pairs of wings. It consists of two levels. It symbolizes two circles of walls defending the city. The outer wings symbolize the height at which the city is located and reflect the traditional interpretation of the word Alethrium.

Economy

Alatri is one of the main tourist centers of this region of Italy.

The city has a plant for the production of organic olive oil . Products awarded the first prize in the competition "BIO 2006".
