Business Model

Unturned is distributed on a Free-to-play basis.

There is also a paid extension to the game called Unturned Permanent Gold Account Upgrade , which gives access to the Gold mode and includes a VIP-set of textures for in-game items (weapons and clothes).

Weapons in this case still need to be found in the game world. The texture appears on the weapon taken in the hands of the character. The texture of the clothes appears on the character even if the clothes have not yet been found, but it does not have functionality (i.e. protection and storage capacities).

Gameplay

The main goal of the game is to survive , protecting yourself from zombies and hostile survivors (that is, other players when playing in multiplayer mode), avoiding infection. The player starts without resources for survival or with a minimum set of them (in the "gold" mode or with the corresponding server settings in other modes). Resources (clothing, weapons, equipment, food, medicine, materials) must be found in specific places (cities, towns, factories, separate structures such as radio towers, crash sites), scattered around the area. Zombies live in the same places, making it difficult to collect resources. In addition to killing zombies and other survivors in the game, the following activities are available:

  • Driving
  • Hunting and fishing
  • Construction of buildings and structures
  • Item making
  • Cooking Improved Food
  • Growing edible plants

The game has the development ("pumping") of skills, the achievement system and the fulfillment of tasks from the NPC ("quests").

Game difficulty modes

Unturned currently has four difficulty modes: easy ( Eng . Easy), medium ( Eng . Medium), hardcore ( Eng . Hardcore) and gold ( Eng . Gold).

Easy Mode

In this mode, the player extracts 1.5 times more resources (loot, drop), in contrast to the average difficulty level. All items that players find do not break / deteriorate. The map of the area is available immediately (however, if you find an object that gives access to the map - the map itself - “Chart” or GPS, and then get rid of it - the map becomes hidden, but you can return it by clicking on the satellite or “satellite” switch button in the map tab Chart " [1] ). Of all the types of zombies, there are only simple zombies and mega-zombies and there is no ballistics for bullets.

Medium Mode

The balance between light mode and hardcore. Things and tools are as bad as they are in hard mode. Zombies are more aggressive and can cause bleeding. Also, the chance of finding good things is less than in easy mode, and objects can be broken when found, and food spoiled. A map of the area becomes available if there is a “Chart” or “GPS” item in the inventory. Ballistics of bullets appears. All kinds of zombies appear.

Hardcore Mode

In the "Hardcore" mode, the interface changes dramatically, which complicates the game process, the number of resources (loot) is also reduced, the method of finding them is complicated, and the main opponent of the game - zombies - become much stronger. Also in this mode, at the beginning of the game there is no map to navigate.

Gold Mode

In order for this mode to become available, you must buy the Unturned Permanent Gold Account Upgrade add-on for the game. Previously, when playing in this mode, the player was given several random items. Now this mode simply separates players with Unturned Permanent Gold Account Upgrade from players who do not purchase the add-on.

Horde Mode

A mode in which a player fights against waves of zombies. At the moment, it is officially absent, but does not have official maps, and maps (not official) can be found only in the "Workshop" of the Steam community.

Arena Mode

Zombie-free mode. Players fight each other, and in this they are hindered by a barrier that deals huge damage and reduces the map.

Mobs and NPCs

Mobs in Unturned are divided into three types: zombies, humans and animals. Zombies are hostile, animals are divided into aggressive predators and neutral herbivores. People are neutral, you can trade with them or take a task for a certain reward.

Zombies

Zombies live in places "marked by civilization" - in settlements (cities, towns, farms, etc.), at industrial, tourist and military facilities, at separate structures (for example, a radio tower, a hut in the forest) and also in crash sites transport.

All zombies, approaching the player at a sufficient distance, attack his melee, causing direct damage, and also sometimes causing bleeding and infection.

When killing zombies with some chance items drop out but the type of objects depends on the type of zombie.

Mega zombies .

Mega zombies are much stronger than ordinary ones and move faster than the player. From a long distance, they periodically throw themselves at the player in huge boulders. They rarely appear, and usually in military locations (on some maps there are civilian mega-zombies). After killing, very good things fall out (e.g. grenades, weapons, etc.).

User Content

The game contains a map editor that allows users to create their own maps. It is also possible to introduce custom models and textures into the game.

Development

Nelson began his igrodela career with developing Roblox , an MMO game designer , where under the pseudonym DeadzoneZackZak he made two games that became hits in the Roblox community - Battlefield, based on the eponymous series of shooters (with over 7 million hits) and Deadzone (over 5 million calls).

Deadzone, developed under the influence of Infestation: Survivor Stories , became the prototype of Unturned. Despite its popularity, it was criticized by the players for numerous bugs and similarities with another popular Roblox game in the same genre - “Apocalypse Rising”.

The next version of Deadzone, Nelson decided to do on Unity - due to the fact that all models, etc. were hacked into Deadzone, etc. were freely available. During development, Deadzone 2 was renamed Unturned. Thus, the “Lego-style” models were inherited from Roblox.

On Steam Greenlight , the redesigned Unturned 2 was pushed again (but the version number was not included in the name). However, the first attempt was unsuccessful. Nelson took the second - and on May 28, 2014 the game was successfully selected, and on July 7, 2014 it became officially available on Steam for free download. At the time of the release of Unturned, Nelson was 16 years old.

The 3.x branch began to be developed in August 2014, and first became available on Steam as a beta version (starting from 3.3.0.0), to download it, one had to use the beta participation code - “OPERATIONMAPLELEAF”. After the beta testing was completed on July 8, 2015, the main one was published on 3.11.3.1, but access to the 2.x branch (the latest version of the branch is 2.2.5) was preserved under the guise of access to beta testing (without code). Later access to the first version (1.1) was also added.

The Russia map, which appeared in version 3.16.0.0, was the first official Unturned part to which other developers besides Sexton had a hand. Also, two more official and two accepted cards appeared: "Greece", "Germany", "Hawaii" and the "Bunker" arena. It is also worth adding that almost every new map comes with new skins and new jewelry for the character (hats, clothes, body jewelry). Also added were the cards "Cyprus" (Survival and Arena) and the map "Carpathians" (The action takes place in Ukrainian mountains of the Carpathians), but the maps of the Carpathians, Hawaii, Greece were removed from the game (Now they are available in the Steam workshop)

The game on July 8, 2017 left early access, and work is currently underway on version 4.0 (but later it was decided to make 4.0 a separate game, and the official name is Unturned 2), where many ideas that could not be implemented will be implemented in previous versions of the game.

On November 24, 2018, a map of France (community map) was added to Unturned. On this large map there are many cities, farms, military installations and of course Paris with the Eiffel Tower.

In April 2019, a community map of Belgium was added. In addition, a lot of different content was added in the form of weapons and vehicles, and some bugs were fixed.

At the moment, Nelson is developing Unturned 4.0, while nothing is heard about the release date. Unturned 4.0 is a new game powered by Unreal Engine 4.
