Biography
Since 1925, joined in the revolutionary activities. Member of the Communist Party of Lithuania since 1928. After the repressions that followed the military coup in Lithuania , in 1928 he was arrested for communist activities. He was imprisoned in the Varniai camp until 1931. After his release, he worked as an evening gymnasium teacher in Kaunas, then as editor of the Revolutionary Worker newspaper ( Revoljucinis darbinikas ). He was a member of the editorial board of the Tiesa newspaper .
In 1936 he graduated from the Faculty of Law of the Kaunas University of Vitovt the Great . In 1937 he was elected a member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Lithuania. He made several trips to the USSR .
After the law adopted by the Government of Lithuania in November 1936, aimed at suppressing the onslaught of the revolutionary movement, V. Nyunk was again arrested and in 1938-1940 he was in the Dimitravskaya forced labor camp.
After the accession of the Baltic states to the USSR in July 1940, he was appointed chairman of the Main Electoral Commission to the People’s Diet.
On August 18, 1940, he was appointed editor of the newspaper Liaudies balsas (published on June 16-25, 1940), which changed its name to Tiesa (from June 26, 1940; the Lithuanian equivalent of the newspaper Pravda ).
From August 1940 to May 1942 - Prosecutor of the Lithuanian SSR.
Quickly moved up the party ladder. From January 1943 he was deputy head of the Propaganda and Agitation Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Lithuania. A year later, he became the second secretary of the Lithuanian Central Committee.
From August 1944 to September 1961 - member of the Bureau, secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolshevik) - Communist Party of Lithuania .
After the end of World War II, from January 1945 to November 1948, he worked as Deputy Chairman of the Council of People's Commissars — Council of Ministers of the Lithuanian SSR.
From November 1948 to February 1949 - secretary of the Central Committee of the Communist Party (Bolsheviks) of Lithuania on propaganda. In 1948, he was appointed Minister of Education of the Lithuanian SSR. From 1955 to 1963 - Chairman of the Supreme Soviet of the Lithuanian SSR.
In 1961 he was released from party work and was appointed chief editor of the journal “Communist of Lithuania” (until 1970). Since 1970 - chairman of the society "Žinija" ("Knowledge").
He taught at Vilnius University .
Deputy of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR 2, 3, 4 and 5th convocations.
In 1962 he was elected a corresponding member of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR, and later - an academician of the Academy of Sciences of the Lithuanian SSR. Since 1968 - member of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR, since 1970 - Secretary of the Academy of Social Sciences.
Buried in the Antakalnis cemetery .
