Biography

Alekos (Alexis, less often and mistakenly referred to as Alexandros [2] ) Vidras was born in 1919 in the village of Polineri of the West Macedonian nome Grevena . Parents, Yannis and Yannula, were pastoralists. Alekos Vidras himself preferred the profession of builder. In the Greco-Italian War (1940-1941) he fought in Epirus and Albania. With the beginning of the triple, German-Italian-Bulgarian occupation of Greece, he joined the resistance organizations, was arrested and imprisoned in Larisa . When transporting from Larisa to the western Macedonian city of Kozani , where his case was to be heard in court, he fled by jumping out of a truck. He joined the first partisan detachment of southern Olympus [3] , which initially included mainly residents of the town of Tsaritsani [4] . He distinguished himself in battles, stood out among the partisans in that at first he wore Greek fustanella , as did the heroes of the Liberation War (1821-1829). After the liberation of the country, during the period of so-called. “White Terror” (1945-1946), like thousands of other former resistance fighters, was forced to again go into the mountains. In the rank of major, he led the battalion of 217 brigades of the Democratic Army of Greece (DSE) [5] . He died in the battle for the city of Greven on July 26, 1947 [6] [3] . His nephew, also Alekos Vidras , became a mathematician, taught at many universities in the world and today is a professor at the University of Cyprus [7] [8] .
