Earl of Elgin ( English Earl of Elgin ) - a hereditary title in the system of Peer of Scotland . The title was created on June 21, 1633 for Thomas Bruce, 3rd Lord Kinloss (1599-1663). Later, the title of Baron Bruce from Warlton was created for him in the Scottish Peer system on July 30, 1641 . His son and successor, Robert Bruce (1627–1685), received the title Earl of Aylesbury in 1664 , becoming a peer of England . In 1747, after the death of Charles Bruce, 4th Earl of Elgin and 3rd Earl of Aylesbury (1682-1747), the titles of Earl of Aylesbury and Baron Bruce were interrupted, and the title of Earl of Aegin passed to Charles Bruce, 9th Earl of Kinkardin (1732— 1771). The titles of Count Elgin and Kinkardin became united. The most famous is the 7th Earl of Elgin (1766-1841), who collected a large collection of ancient Greek art, known as the " Elgin Marbles ". In Dublin, there are roads named after the Earls of Elgin - Elgin Road and Aylesbury Road.
