The early years

Annette Carol Bening was born in Topeka , Kansas , and was the youngest of four children. The mother of the future actress, Shirley Ashley, worked as a singer in the church. Father, Arnett Grant Bening, was a sales consultant and insurance agent. [3] [4] [5] In addition to Annette, her sister Jane and two brothers Bradley and Byron grew up in the family.

Bening spent her early childhood in Wichita , where her family moved in 1959. She first made her debut on stage in the musical Sounds of Music . In 1975, she graduated from Patrick Henry High School , where she studied drama. She also studied at San Diego Mesa College and the State University of San Francisco .

Career

Bening made her film debut with a minor role in the comedy " In the Lap of Nature ." However, after two years, she made a breakthrough in the crime drama “ Scam ”, which also starred John Cusack and Angelica Houston . The actress earned her first Oscar and BAFTA nominations .

In 1991, Annette starred in the movie Bugsy with her future husband Warren Beatty , who produced the film and starred with the actress. For the reincarnation of Virginia Hill , the mistress of the gangster of the 30-40s Bugsy Siegel , Bening received a nomination for the Golden Globe . In 1994, already married to each other, Bening and Beatty again worked together in the drama Love Story . In the future, the actress continued to actively act in films, appearing in the films “ Richard III ”, “ American President ” (nomination for the Golden Globe), “ Mars Attacks! "And" Siege ".

The greatest critical and commercial success of her career was the 1999 film American Beauty . Bening played Caroline Burnham, the wife of the protagonist, an ambitious and long unhappy married woman. The film has received many prestigious awards, and Annette has been awarded the United States Film Actors Guild and the BAFTA . The actress also once again nominated for the Oscars and Golden Globes, which lost to her closest rival, Hilary Swank .

After several passing films and a short break in her career, Bening returned to the cinema in the form of the theater star Julia Lambert in the comedy drama Theater . Although the film gathered a small box office, critics praised the actress, calling her play “vibrant” [6] and “energetic” [7] . Bening got her first Golden Globe and was once again nominated for an Oscar, which she lost to Hilary Swank for the second time. A year later, she appeared in the television movie "Mrs. Harris", for the role in which she was nominated for an Emmy [8] and Golden Globe.

In 2006, Annette Bening appeared in the movie On the Edge . Although the comedy drama was poorly appreciated by critics, they again praised the actress’s play, for which she received a new Golden Globe nomination.

After the failure of the film Women , Bening starred in the independent film Mother and Child , which was praised by critics. [9] In the next film, Kids Are Alright , Annette Bening, along with Julianne Moore, played a same-sex couple raising two children. Critics did not cease to be amazed at the acting of Bening, and some of them noted that “she deserves an Oscar for her brilliant role” [10] [11] . At the 68th Golden Globe ceremony, Annette won a second statuette and was nominated for an Oscar for the fourth time.
