Hierophant ( Greek ἱεροφάντης "showing the sacred") - among the ancient Greeks, the senior life priest at the Eleusinian sacraments .
He was supposed to come from a family of Keriks or ; presided over all the celebrations of Demeter , consecrated to the big and small mysteries and, along with the Daduh , the second high priest, sang the songs of praise to Demeter and Persephone during the festivities. Next to him stood a hierophantis ( Greek ἱερόφαντις ) - the high priestess of Demeter of Eleusis .
In the Roman spiritual hierarchy, the hierophant corresponded to the great pontiff ( lat. Pontifex maximus ).
