Hieromonk

Orthodox hieromonk

Hieromonache ( Greek Ἱερομόναχος ) - in Orthodoxy a monk who has the rank of priest . San hieromonk corresponds to the rank of priest in the white clergy .

Initially, during the establishment of monasticism in the 4th century , the monks did not take the office of priesthood. In Russia, monasticism arose in the 11th century, beginning with Theodosius of Pechersk [1] . By this time, the priesthood in Byzantium existed for more than one century.

In the local churches of the Russian tradition priest- monks are called priest- monks . The priests, the ryasophoric monks, may be called sacred or hieromonk , depending on local customs. Ieroskhimonakhami are called priests- shimonahi . According to the church protocol, all hieromonks should respectfully be treated with the words: “Your Taught!” [2] .

In the Old Believer tradition, a monk who has a holy dignity is called a priest .
